1.4 WEATHER LIMITATIONS

1.4.1 Placing and Protection of Concrete During Cold-Weather

Concrete placement shall be discontinued when the air temperature reaches 35 degrees F and is falling. Placement may begin when the air temperature reaches 35 degrees F and is rising. The aggregates shall be free of ice, snow, and frozen lumps before entering the mixer. The government will ensure the concrete is protected from freezing for the first 7 calendar days after placement.

SECTION 03 31 25 Page 3

1.4.2 Placing and Protection of Concrete During Hot-Weather

The temperature of the concrete as placed shall not exceed 95 degrees F.

The mixing water and/or aggregates shall be cooled, if necessary, to maintain a satisfactory placing temperature. The government will take any other precautions necessary for hot weather placement.

1.5 PLANT, EQUIPMENT, MACHINES, AND TOOLS

1.5.1 General Requirements

Provide plant, equipment, machines, and tools used in the work shall be subject to approval and shall be maintained in a satisfactory working condition at all times. The equipment shall have the capability of producing the required product, and placing the required product. Use of the equipment shall be discontinued if it produces unsatisfactory results.

The Contracting Officer shall have access at all times to the plant and equipment to ensure proper operation and compliance with the specifications.

1.5.2 Mix Plant

Ready-mixed concrete shall conform to ASTM C94/C94M except as otherwise specified. Batch tickets shall meet the requirements of ASTM C94/C94M.

1.6 SELF-CONSOLIDATING CONCRETE

Self-consolidating concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 4,500 psi at 28 calendar days. The maximum water to cement ratio shall not exceed 0.50 by weight. SCC shall have air content by volume of concrete of 5 to 8 percent. The slump shall be between 9 and 11 inches and the flow shall be between 18 and 24 inches. The visual stability index shall be 0 to 1. The minimum initial set time of the mixture shall be four hours.

1.7 SELF-CONSOLIDATING CONCRETE MIXTURE PROPORTIONS

A mix design previously used on a similar project in USACE-Pittsburgh District is included as Attachment A - ACI STRENGTH DESIGN **** 4500 P.S.I.

AE to this specification section. The mix design provided as Attachment A may be utilized by the contractor, but must be submitted for approval as a requirement of this specification. The Self-Consolidating Concrete mixture proportions shall be determined by the Contractor, and submitted for review and approval at least 30 business days before placement. The submission shall be accompanied by test reports from a laboratory validated by the USACE-ERDC- MTC which show that proportions thus selected will produce concrete of the qualities indicated. No substitution shall be made in the source or type of materials used in the work without additional tests to show that the quality of the new materials and concrete are satisfactory.

SECTION 03 31 25 Page 4

No mix design shall be used until notice of acceptance has been given by the Contracting Officer. All items listed below shall be included in the Concrete Mixture Proportioning:

a. The concrete mixture quantities (mass) of all ingredients per cubic yard that will be used in the manufacture of the concrete shall be stated.

The mass of the aggregates shall be in a saturated surface-dry condition. Ingredients shall include Portland cement, pozzolan, silica fume, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, admixtures, and water. The maximum water-cement ratio shall be stated.

b. The slump flow may be adjusted by the Contractor to aid placement. The

Contractor shall submit a range for the slump flow that will suspend particles within the mixture and will not cause segregation.

c. Names, types, and quantities of the admixtures shall be stated.

Manufactures literature of all admixtures used shall be submitted.

d. Gradations test results for the coarse and fine aggregates. Submit supplier's certification of compliance that states the material supplied meets the requirements of the specification under which they are furnished.

e. Certified copies of laboratory test reports for cementitious materials, including mill tests and all other test data, for Portland cement, pozzolan, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and silica fume.

Cementitious materials will be accepted on the basis of the manufacturer's certification of compliance, accompanied by mill test reports that materials meet the requirements of the specification under which they are furnished. Certification and mill test reports shall be from samples taken from the particular lot furnished.

f. Test results showing the concrete is capable of producing the required strengths, slump flow, visual stability index, and air content. High quality colored photos of the visual stability index test results shall be submitted.
