Minimum Technical Specifications Medium‐ and High‐throughput Wireless Communication Devices

Introduction and Statement of Need Two types of wireless communication devices are required to telemeter data from remote geophysical monitoring sites to data acquisition and analysis centers. These products differ principally in their channel‐ bandwidth and data throughput rates. Importantly, these devices must be compatible with certain existing systems to allow direct replacement to address failures and expand existing monitoring networks as needed.

The USGS existing systems are 53 Afar Communications pulsAR radios, model: AR‐24027. They will be used across diverse climates and conditions, ranging from alpine to equatorial. They will be subject to extreme cold and heat and will be installed at unmanned sites as part of long‐term hazard monitoring programs. Low power, sufficient data throughput, and dependability are essential to operational success. Medium‐ throughput devices will be used preferentially at independent sites while High‐throughput devices will be used at intermediary data concentration nodes to transmit accumulations of data. This solicitation specifically seeks devices operating in the 2.4‐2.5 GHz portion of the ISM spectrum to reduce the possibility of interference with collocated radios operating in the 902‐928 MHz ISM band.

The following specifications are common to both devices:

1. Operational Radio Frequency Range: 2.4‐2.5 GHz (ISM band)

2. Transmit Power Range: 0‐27 dBm (or greater); user‐selectable/programmable in 1 dBm steps

3. Direct sequence Spread‐Spectrum modulation scheme

4. Receiver Sensitivity (at 10E‐6 BER): ‐86 dBm or better

5. Ethernet Port Speed: 10/100 MHz, full/half duplex, auto‐negotiable, auto‐crossover (mdix)

6. Supported Network Topologies: Point‐to‐Point, Point‐to‐Multipoint, Mesh, and Linear

7. Devices must be locally and remotely accessible and configurable through Telnet protocol

8. Devices must be locally/directly accessible through serial console

9. Devices must be detectable/readable using EConsole network management software

10. Input Voltage: DC power‐over‐Ethernet (POE): 10‐58 VDC

11. Power Consumption: not to exceed 8 Watts

12. RF Connectors: N‐Type, Female

13. Enclosure must meet IP66 standards

The following specifications are unique to the Mid‐throughput device (Item #1):

1. RF Channel Bandwidth: 17 MHz

2. RF Channels: 4, non‐overlapping

3. Data rate/throughput: capable of rates up to 11 Mbps

The following specifications are unique to the High‐throughput device (Item #2):

1. RF Channel Bandwidth: 4.6 MHz

2. RF Channels: 11, non‐overlapping

3. Data rate/throughput: capable of rates up to 2.75 Mbps
