Specifications

Absolute Broadband Radiometer (ABR)

Background

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires Absolute Broadband Radiometers (ABRs) to measure the irradiance of laser-illuminated integrating sphere sources. The laser is a tunable, 1 kHz repetition rate Diode-Pumped Solid State (DPSS) laser with Optical Parametric Oscillation (OPO) and 5 ns pulse duration and a spectral range from 250 nm to 1180 nm.

Procurement of the ABRs will allow for determination of the irradiance of the source at each laser wavelength and will serve, when combined with a separate precision aperture (this aperture is not the responsibility of the Contractor), as the radiometric reference standard for realizing spectral radiance responsivity at the system level for charge-coupled device (CCD) type spectrographs. This will allow NIST to implement automated, autonomous, radiometric calibration across the full spectral range of the spectrograph. Implementation by NIST of instrument control features using Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) will allow for fully automated measurements. The new capability will be used to characterize the Marine Optical BuoY (MOBY) spectrograph systems.

At the MOBY calibration facility in Honolulu, Hawaii, a broadly tunable, kilohertz pulse rate, diode-pumped solid-state laser is being used to monitor the stray light in the MOBY Marine Optical System (MOS) Offer spectrographs. Currently, the laser characterization of the spectrographs used in MOS or Refresh optical system does not provide for autonomous, accurate measurement of the spectrograph radiometric responsivity. Implementation of the ABR is necessary to realize this milestone.

Scope

The Contractor shall provide six (6) ABRs with that meet the minimum technical requirements.

Minimum Requirements

The system shall meet the minimum requirements identified below. All items must be new. Used or remanufactured equipment will not be considered for award. Experimental, or prototype will not be considered. The use of “gray market” components not authorized for sale in the U.S. by the proposer is not acceptable. All line items shall be shipped in the original manufacturer’s packaging and include all original documentation and software, when applicable.

Contract Line Item Number (CLIN) 0001: The contractor shall provide quantity of six (6) Absolute Broadband Radiometers (ABRs) that meet the following minimum technical requirements.

A- System Requirements: Absolute Broadband Radiometer (ABR):

1. The detector chamber that includes a precision aperture, a silicon photodiode, and a 10 kΩ thermistor shall be sealed, filled with clean and dry nitrogen gas at one atmosphere, and temperature-regulated with a standard uncertainty of the thermistor temperature of 0.1°C using a thermo-electric cooler (TEC).

2. It shall be possible to vent and refill the detector chamber with clean and dry nitrogen or argon.

3. The entrance port shall be sealed with a flat optical window fabricated from UV grade fused silica and roughened to make it slightly diffuse. The window shall be sufficiently diffuse to meet requirement 6 below.

4. The spectral response range shall be 200 nm to 1100 nm.

5. The silicon photodiode detector shall have an integrated quartz glass window.

6. When illuminated with a coherent laser source (e.g. a helium-neon laser at 632.8 nm), the distribution of the optical flux on the detector shall not have interference effects, equivalently, nor shall the output signal vary in a quasi-periodic fashion with fine tuning of the wavelength from a tunable laser (e.g. a titanium-sapphire laser).

7. The dark current of the photometer (e.g. output when a lens cap is in place) shall be 100 fA or less when the detector is maintained at 25°C with zero bias voltage.

8. The photodiode sensing area shall be 10 mm by 10 mm square, and its shunt resistor shall be ≥ 0.4 GΩ at 23°C±1°C with a reverse voltage of 10 mV.

9. The diameter of the precision aperture shall be 4 mm.

10. The environmental temperature over which the Absolute Broadband Radiometer will maintain temperature control to 25°C±0.1°C shall be 15°C to 40°C.

11. The environmental temperature over which the Absolute Broadband Radiometer can be stored without damage while still meeting requirement 17 below when returned to the operating temperature of 25°C±0.1°C shall be -20°C to +80°C.

12. The housing shall be in a cylindrical shape and not exceed 63.5 mm in diameter and 70 mm in length.

13. There shall be at least two blind-tap ¼-20 mounting holes equally spaced on the circumference of the cylindrical housing for mounting to optical – mechanical hardware.

14. The front face of the cylinder shall contain the optical window and be recessed from the front end with φ2.035-40, UNS-2A, external threads compatible with Thorlabs 2” Lens Tube systems, e.g. the end cap part number SM2CP1; specifications at https://www.thorlabs.com/newgrouppage9.cfm?objectgroup_id=3383.

15. The back face shall contain the electrical connections. The electrical connections shall be recessed so the Absolute Broadband Radiometer can stand on the back end.

16. There shall be two electrical connections, one for the output current of the photodiode using a standard Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC) coaxial connector, the other a female 10 pin Hirose electrical connector with pinouts specified, see in the Arroyo Instruments model 5240 TEC Source User’s Manual for a typical example.

17. The irradiance responsivity of the Absolute Broadband Radiometer shall be stable to 0.2% or less over a 12-month interval in the spectral region from 400 nm to 900 nm in recognition of possible change in responsivity from UV exposure.

18. All materials, glues, thermal paste, etc. used in the detector chamber shall be selected for low outgassing over the acceptable range of storage temperatures.

19. There is no requirement for the Contractor to provide an absolute irradiance calibration on the Absolute Broadband Radiometer, that will be performed by NIST upon receipt of order.

20. All mechanical surfaces, except where necessary for functionality (e.g., electrical contact, thermal conductivity, mechanical fasteners, etc.), shall be treated to prevent interreflections and scattered light, e.g. blackened.

B- Performance Requirements: Absolute Broadband Radiometer:

1. The Absolute Broadband Radiometer shall operate with existing NIST pre-amplifiers and thermoelectric cooler TEC controllers, such as the Arroyo Instruments model number 5240 with a custom cable (the cable is not a requirement for the Contractor).

2. The Absolute Broadband Radiometer shall be compatible with the 2” Lens Tube design of Thorlabs, Inc., e.g. part number SM2CP1.

3. The Absolute Broadband Radiometer shall be able to be calibrated for irradiance responsivity in the NIST Sensor Science Division radiometric calibration facilities.
