About this file
This is a specification sheet from the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Appalachian Fruit Research Station (AFRS) detailing requirements for a liquid handling robot. The robot must have modular hardware and open-source architecture to automate molecular protocols such as library preparations, nucleic acid extractions, and Poly-A Selection.
The technical requirements specify that the robot must be compatible with magnetic bead-based protocols, support customizable programming using Python or Perl, work with 96-well plates through a 96-channel pipette, and have an open platform for additional components like thermoblocks, reagent wells, shakers, and pipette tip containers. The robot must fit within 90 × 73 × 90 cm (W, D, H) bench space. It requires certified testing and verification of liquid handling components, must include operation manuals, and needs appropriate packaging for safe delivery. This procurement is part of solicitation #12305B25Q0032, which is a total small business set-aside under NAICS code 334516 with quotes due January 16, 2025 at 9am EST.

Text version
Specification Sheet The USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Appalachian Fruit Research Station (AFRS), Innovative Fruit Production, Improvement and Protection unit is requesting a liquid handling robot that has modular hardware and open-source architecture to enable various molecular protocols to be programmed and automated. This robot will be used to accelerate and minimize errors of manual molecular protocols that are commonly performed by staff, thus improving our unit’s efficiency, capabilities, and accuracy when conducting molecular protocols.
Background and Scope
We need a liquid handling robot to automate molecular protocols such as library preparations, nucleic acid extractions, and Poly-A Selection. These robots increase accuracy, precision, speed, and reproducibility at which molecular protocols can be accomplished.
Requirements
This robot must be compatible with magnetic bead-based protocols and facilitate customizable programing. The customizable program is a requirement to facilitate development of new protocols to run on the robotic platform to extend its life and usefulness. This open programing component will require compatibility with standard programming languages such as python or perl.
Additionally, the robot must be able to work with 96 well plates to facilitate multiplexed sample preparations. This requirement is met through the inclusion of a 96-channel pipette. Lastly, the robot must have an open platform so that it can be outfitted with different components to facilitate operations with different protocols. These additional components include thermoblocks for PCR and PCR-like steps, reagent wells, shakers, and pipette tip containers. The robot must fit within a 90 × 73 × 90 cm (W, D, H) area on a bench top.
Testing and Verification
The robot needs to come with a certified testing and verification on components that transport or move liquid to ensure they have accurate and precise operation.
Government Furnished Property
