Once the Free (Power) Turbine is positioned and seated in the skid, 50 bags of desiccant shall be evenly distributed within the lower half of the protective envelope.
CAUTION: Great care must be exercised to ensure the protective envelope is not torn or damaged during this procedure.
The steel clamps used to secure the Free (Power) Turbine to the metal shipping skid shall also be padded so as not to damage the lower protective envelope. After the Free (Power) Turbine is secured in the metal shipping skid with the lower half of the protective envelope in place, the upper half of the protective envelope shall be placed over the top of the Free (Power) Turbine. The two halves of the protective envelope shall be joined together utilizing a heat-sealing device designed for this purpose.
CAUTION: Care must be exercised during this procedure to insure enough heat is applied to the seam to properly and securely seal the two halves while avoiding excessive heat that will cause the protective envelope to melt.
Prior to sealing the two protective envelopes together, the humidity indicator shall be installed in a manner that permits visibility through the humidity indicator/logbook inspection access cover installed on the plywood-shipping container. All excess air shall be evacuated from the protective envelope just prior to completion of the sealing process using a suitable vacuum device.
CAUTION: Great care must be exercised when evacuating the air so as not to crush the protective envelope to such a degree that it is torn or damaged.
Note: (1) When properly evacuated and sealed, the protective envelope should form completely and snuggly around the Free (Power) Turbine and remain in that posture after 24 hours elapsed time.
Note: (2) Once the above packing and packaging procedure is initiated, it must be completed without delay so as to minimize the exposure of the desiccant to atmospheric moisture.
5.2.1. The N3 Gearbox shall be pack/packaged in its original shipping container. Additionally, the N3 Gearbox shall be sealed in a protective envelope constructed of barrier paper conforming to MIL-PRF-131 Class 3 with one pound of desiccant conforming to MIL-D-3464 enclosed.
