About this file
This is a Commercial Item Description (CID) specification document for stretch-type socks authorized for use by all federal agencies through the General Services Administration.
The specification covers two sock types intended for Department of Defense personnel: Type I cotton/nylon dress socks and Type II polyester/nylon/spandex or rubber liner or dress socks. Type I socks shall be seamless, circular 1X1 true rib knit, fabricated on 132-240 needle machines, made from cotton yarn plied or plated with stretch nylon yarn with cotton dominating the inside. Type II socks shall be circular knitted with reciprocated heels and flat toe seams, knit from 18/1 cc tetra-channel polyester fiber (minimum 78%), combined with textured nylon and 120-180 denier spandex or 95-100 gage rubber in the cuff (maximum 2%), with elastic tops measuring 2 inches by 3½ inches wide. Both types shall be black or as specified in contract, with size ranges conforming to National Association of Hosiery Manufactures (NAHM) standards: Type I in Small through Extra Large (sizes 9-11 through 15+); Type II in Extra-Extra Small through Large (sizes 5-7 through 13-16). Physical requirements include dimensional change limits of 4.0% maximum in both wale and course directions after three laundering cycles, maximum 3.0% pilling, minimum colorfastness ratings of 4.0 for laundering/perspiration/crocking, and moisture wicking of minimum 5.0 inches. Socks must achieve ball bursting strength of not less than 85 pounds per ASTM D3787. Each sock requires size marking, fiber content, and contractor name applied below the instep in white, along with washing instructions and individually barcoded labels in packages of three including DLA Troop Support logo and both National Stock Number and 12-digit Universal Product Code elements. Quality assurance requires visual examination for defects including holes, tears, elastic degradation, color inconsistencies, knit construction deviations, missing markings, and barcode readability issues.
