About this file
This is a Military Detail Specification (MIL-DTL-20268J) for Marine Corps service and dress cap frames, issued February 18, 2025, superseding the previous version from February 13, 2017.
The specification covers cap frames in two types with multiple classes and 15 size options ranging from size 6 to 7-3/4. Type I features black poromeric visors with either black poromeric (Class 1) or gold (Class 2) chin straps. Type II features black broadcloth visors with field grade or general officer embroidery, paired with gold or black poromeric chin straps across four classes. Key material requirements include: high-density polyethylene inner bands (2-1/4±1/16 inches wide, 0.030±0.002 inch thick); gabardine or wool-synthetic headband outer covering; artificial leather sweatbands; poromeric or leather visor construction with specific lamination requirements; chromium stainless steel support stays; 27-ligne insignia buttons; spring steel grommets with white pyroxylin coating; and specialized threads (cotton, nylon, or tarnish-resistant synthetic gold yarn for embroidery). The visor must be molded to crescent shape with a 30-35 degree set angle from horizontal. Construction requirements specify detailed stitching types, seam configurations, and edge treatments per ASTM D6193 standards. Conformance inspection includes dimensional verification against specified head measurements (19 to 24-1/4 inches circumference), examination of defects classified as major or minor per Table IX, and material testing per referenced ASTM standards. First article inspection is required when specified in the contract. Packaging requirements are to be specified in the acquisition document.
