THE APPLICABLE GENERAL AND REFERENCED REQUIREMENTS OF SPECIFICATION MIL-STD-2073-1 FORM PART OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, MATERIALS WILL BE MINIMUM SIZE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD-2073-1. WEIGHTS AND SIZES ARE ESTIMATED AND MAY VARY SLIGHTLY. INTERMEDIATE PACKAGING AND PACKING WILL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH

SPECIFICATION MIL-STD-2073-1 OR AS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED HEREIN.

TOLERANCES SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS. QUALITY PERFORMANCE AND TESTING REQUIREMENTS SHALL BE IN CONFORMANCE WITH MIL-STD-2073-1, OR AS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.

A. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, CLEANING AND DRYING SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH PARAGRAPH 5.2.1 OF

MIL-STD-2073-1. THE RIFLE SHALL BE DISASSEMBLED AS NECESSARY TO ACCOMPLISH THE SPECIAL CLEANING OF BURNED POWDER RESIDUE. SURFACES OF COMPONENTS SUBJECTED TO BURNED POWDER RESIDUES SUCH AS THE BOLT AND BOLT CARRIER ASSEMBLY, FIRING PIN, BARREL BORE, AND CHAMBER, ETC, SHALL BE SCRUBBED CLEAN WITH A BRISTLE BRUSH AND/OR SWABS SATURATED WITH RIFLE BORE CLEANER CONFORMING TO MIL-PRF-

372. FLUSH THE SCRUBBED SURFACES WITH SOLVENT CONFORMING TO P-D-680. ALL CLEANED SURFACES SHALL BE THOROUGHLY DRIED PRIOR TO PRESERVATIVE APPLICATION. DRYING SHALL BE WITH PREPARED COMPRESSED AIR, EXCEPT FOR THE BARREL BORE, CHAMBER, AND FLASH SUPPRESSOR, WHICH SHALL BE DRIED

BY WIPING WITH CLEAN, LINT-FREE SWABS.

B. ALL METALLIC SURFACES OF THE RIFLE SHALL BE COATED WITH MIL-PRF-32033, APPLIED BY BRUSHING OR SPRAYING. EXCESS OIL SHALL BE THOROUGHLY DRAINED FROM THE COATED SURFACES. THE PRESERVED RIFLE SHALL BE ALLOWED TO DRAIN FOR A MINIMUM OF ONE HOUR PRIOR TO CONTINUING WITH THE PACKAGING

PROCESS.

E. INSERT RIFLE WITH BLOCKING IN BOX, BOX INSIDE DIMENSIONS: 32.0 X 9.5 X 3.5; MANUFACTURER'S JOINT SHALL BE SECURE WITH METAL FASTENERS. NOTE: SERIAL NUMBER MUST BE FACING UP. F. PACKING:

LEVEL A. A QUANTITY OF 50 UNIT CONTAINERS SHALL BE PACKED (PACK FLAT 5 PER LAYER, 10 LAYERS HIGH) IN A MINIMUM SIZE SHIPPING CONTAINER. LEVEL A PACK SHALL BE IN AN ASTM D6251 CONTAINER STYLE A,B,I OR J, TYPE OS, GRADE B. CLOSURE SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM D6251.

LEVEL B. PACK SHALL BE IN AN ASTM D5168 STYLE E, WEATHER RESISTANT (WR) CONTAINER. CLOSURE SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM D5168. THE LEVEL B PACK CONTAINER SHALL BE SECURED TO AN EXPENDABLE PALLET SIZED TO MATCH THE CONTAINER. THE SAME TYPE OF METALLIC STRAPPING SELECTED TO REINFORCE

THE CONTAINER SHALL BE USED TO SECURE THE CONTAINER TO THE PALLET.

ODD QUANTITIES: FOR QUANTITIES LESS THAN SPECIFIED, ADJUST THE SIZE OF THE SHIPPING CONTAINER TO

OBTAIN MINIMUM CUBE.

ALL NON-MANUFACTURED WOOD USED IN PACKAGING SHALL BE HEAT-TREATED TO A CORE TEMPERATURE OF 56 DEGREES CELSIUS FOR A MINIMUM OF 30 MINUTES. THE BOX/ PALLET MANUFACTURER AND THE MANUFACTURER OF WOOD USED AS INNER PACKAGING OR PALLET GATE/ FILLER ASSEMBLIES SHALL BE AFFILIATED WITH AN INSPECTION AGENCY ACCREDITED BY THE BOARD OF REVIEW OF THE AMERICAN LUMBER STANDARD COMMITTEE.

EACH BOX/ PALLET OR OTHER PACKING MATERIAL SHALL BE MARKED TO SHOW THE CONFORMANCE TO THE INTERNATIONAL PLANT PROTECTION CONVENTION STANDARD. BOXES/ PALLETS AND ANY OTHER WOOD PACKING MATERIAL MADE OF NON-MANUFACTURED WOOD SHALL BE CERTIFIED HEAT-TREATED. THE QUALITY MARK SHALL BE PLACED ON BOTH ENDS OF THE OUTER PACKAGING, BETWEEN THE END CLEATS OR END BATTENS; ON TWO

SIDES OF THE PALLET OR OTHER PACKING MATERIAL.

G. MARKING: MARKING OF UNIT AND EXTERIOR CONTAINERS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD 129. PACKING LISTS ARE REQUIRED. SERIAL NUMBER MARKINGS ARE REQUIRED. NOMENCLATURE SHALL NOT BE MARKED ON

THE SHIPPING CONTAINER.
