U.S. Embassy Program Strategic Goals and Objectives

The U.S. Department of State, U.S. Embassy LIBREVILLE announces an Open Competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects that expose the consequences of environmental crime in Gabon.

U.S. Embassy Program Background and Description
Gabon has vast natural resources in its maritime and terrestrial ecosystems that are being exploited through illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing; illegal logging; and poaching. According to a 2019 report by the Environmental Investigation Agency, illegal logging costs Gabon an estimated $1 billion per year, while WildAid reports IUU fishing results in $610 million in losses per year.

Gabon has vast natural resources in its maritime and terrestrial ecosystems that are being exploited by malign actors in the form of illegal, unreported, unregulated (IUU) fishing; illegal logging; and poaching. Outside of the few Gabonese fishermen and farmers directly impacted, most Gabonese are unaware of or indifferent to the illicit activities. The project seeks to raise the profile of the issue and expose the consequences of environmental crimes through a public relations campaign, training of investigative journalists, and technical assistance to the Gabonese government on tools to report environmental crimes. By changing the public perception of the issue, the project seeks to mobilize the Gabonese population to put pressure on the government to do more to counteract these illicit activities, thereby limiting encroachment of malign actors in Gabon.
