1. Cement shall be Portland Cement, Type I, IA, III, or IIIA conforming to the requirements of ASTM C-150.

2. Water shall be clean and free from deleterious amounts of acids, oil, alkalis, and organic materials, and conform to ASTM C-109.

3. All aggregates shall conform to the requirements of ASTM

C-33. The aggregate particles shall be clean, hard, unweathered, and uncoated.

a. Fine aggregate shall be natural sand conforming to the requirements of ASTM C-33.

b. Coarse aggregates shall be crushed stone or washed gravel conforming to the grading requirements of ASTM C-33, size No. 67, 3/4 to No. 4.

4. The concrete mix design shall conform to the following criteria:

a. Compressive Strength - 3000 psi @ 28 days (min).

b. Slump - 2 to 4 inches.

1. General: Prior to placement, the Contractor shall submit his procedure to provide concrete to the site.

2. Anchor Bolts and Expansion Bolts:

03300-3

a. The Contractor will set all helical anchor shafts and steel cap plates precisely and maintain positions during concreting operations. Anchor bolts if needed shall be standard manufactured items intended for the use shown. Bolts, nuts, washers and appurtenant items shall be galvanized unless otherwise noted.

Bolts shall be furnished with cut washers.

3. Pipe Sleeves and Embedded Items:

a. Before placing any concrete, the Contractor will determine that all embedded metal pipe sleeves, anchors, anchor slots, anchor bolts, wedge inserts, concrete inserts, rebar and similar items are firmly secured and fastened or grouted in place.

4. Placing Concrete

e. The Contractor will convey concrete from mixer to forms as rapidly as practicable and by methods which will prevent segregation or loss of ingredients, will deposit the concrete as nearly as practicable in its final position. The Contractor will place concrete before the initial set has occurred, and in no event after it has contained its water content for more than one (1) hour. The concrete will be placed on clean, damp surfaces, free from water, or upon properly consolidated fills, but never upon soft mud, dry porous earth, or frozen ground.

g. The Contractor will deposit continuously and as rapidly as practicable until the unit of operation is completed.

h. The Contractor will consolidate all concrete by vibration so that the concrete is thoroughly worked around the reinforcement, around embedded items, and into corners of forms, eliminating all air or stone pockets which may cause honeycombing, pitting, or planes of weakness.

i. In joining fresh concrete to concrete that has already set, the Contractor will remove all loose

03300-4 and foreign materials from set concrete, scrub with wire brooms and thoroughly clean the set concrete, and will moisten existing surfaces when the new concrete is placed.

5. Weather Conditions:

a. Protection - The Contractor will:

(1) Provide adequate protection against rain, sleet and snow before and during placement and finish-ing of concrete.

(2) Provide adequate protective measures to maintain the temperature of the concrete as specified.

(3) Keep a thermometer on the job site at all times to record temperature.

b. Cold Weather Concreting - The Contractor will:

(1) Not place concrete when the atmospheric tempera-ture is below 40°F or when the concrete is likely to be subjected to freezing temperatures within 24 hours after it has been deposited unless adequate temporary heating is provided. In no case shall concrete be exposed to freezing temperature for 72 hours after placing.

(3) Use no frozen materials or materials containing ice in concrete.

(4) Use no salt or other chemicals to prevent freezing.

6. Repairing and Patching - The Contractor will:

a. Remove and replace at no additional cost, any con-crete not formed as shown on plans, concrete out of alignment, surfaces beyond required tolerances, or defective surfaces which cannot be properly repaired or patched, including any concrete failing to meet the strength requirements.

03300-5

b. Clean, dampen, and fill all bolt and tie holes and other similar defects, with patching concrete immedi-ately after removing forms.

c. Remove to sound concrete all bulges, projections, honeycomb and all other defects in exposed concrete, and patch. Thickness of patch: 1-inch, minimum.

Cut the perimeter edges of all areas to receive patching mix perpendicular to the surface or under-cut. Feather-edge patches will not be allowed. Do all patching before concrete is thoroughly dry.

7. Curing - The Contractor will:

a. Protect concrete from premature drying. Provide temporary housing, covering, or other protection used in curing and keep in place and intact a minimum of 24 hours after placement.

b. Keep concrete continuously moist for seven (7) days, and prevent rapid drying at the end of the curing period.

(2) Use non-staining polyethylene film and keep all joints weighted to prevent wind penetration.

8. Finishing:

a. A rubbed finish shall be given to all exposed walls above finish ground line. Fins and other projections shall be carefully removed and damaged places re-paired. After all required patching, cleaning, and correction of major imperfections have been completed, the concrete surface shall be rubbed with cement or carborundum bricks and water, leaving the surface uniformly smooth and clean.
