1.0 GENERAL
1.1 BACKGROUND
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is an administrative federal agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. The agency is a component of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
USCIS is responsible to administer and determine the eligibility of individuals who wish to become U.S. citizens through the naturalization process. Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is granted to a foreign citizen or national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). If approved, USCIS will schedule the individuals to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America at an administrative naturalization ceremony.
The agency has multiple field offices nation-wide which process the applications of individuals who wish to become U.S. citizens. The San Francisco Field Office (SFR) is a component of USCIS. The office is located at 630 Sansome Street, San Francisco, California 94111, and has jurisdiction over 12 counties in Northern California.
