Replace Greenhouse 4 (East) Polycarbonate Glazing Robert W. Holley Center for Agriculture and Health

Ithaca, NY May 28, 2020

Statement of Work

1) This project will consist of replacing the existing glazing system of Greenhouse 4 (East) with a new

16mm acrylic double skinned glazing system.

2) Project Location: Robert W. Holley Center for Agriculture and Health, 538 Tower Road, Ithaca, NY

14853, Greenhouse 4 (East).

3) Shop Drawings shall be submitted as indicated in the attached specification. Submit one copy of shop drawings to Michael Merchant at the Ithaca, NY location and one (1) electronic copy of shop drawings to Wayne Shekailo. Shop drawings shall be reviewed for general conformance with the

Contract Documents and approval by the COR does relieve the Contractor of complying with the requirements of the Contract Documents.

4) The contractor shall provide all labor, materials, equipment, supplies, transportation, utilities, supervision, bonds insurance, permits and incidentals for all work.

5) Contractor shall coordinate all work activities with the COR prior to beginning any work. All work shall be scheduled in a manner such that on-going research is not impacted negatively. Normal working hours are from 6:30am until 5:30pm Monday thru Friday, excluding federal holidays. Work outside of normal hours must be approved by the COR. All submittals shall be submitted, received and returned to the contractor, by COR representative prior to commencement of work.

6) Base Bid shall be the replacement of the sloped roof glazing system as indicated in the Statement of Work and attached specifications, including new aluminum glazing caps and associated gaskets.

a. Bid Option #1 shall be to furnish and install new glazing systems for sidewall conditions with new aluminum glazing caps and associated gaskets.

7) Statement of work:

a. Demolition notes:

• Base Bid Demolition is to include all sloped roof glazing panels.

1. Bid Option # 1 demolition is to include all non-roof glazed panels including but not limited to sidewalls, vents and doors.

• Demolish only the amount of existing glazing that can be replaced by the end of the workday to ensure the integrity of the greenhouse.

• Remove and dispose of above-mentioned glazing systems offsite in accordance with local ordinances and requirements.

b. Installation/New work:

• Install all new acrylic glazing including all caps, flashings, tapes and sealants for a complete system.

• Do not demolish or install work during rainy or other adverse weather conditions.

• Do not install materials at temperatures lower than recommended by respective material manufacturer for the product used.

• Do not install any Asbestos Containing Products.

• Contractor shall provide temporary barriers or warning signs announcing construction activity in any adjacent traffic patterns.

• Do not allow debris to accumulate that will be windblown to neighboring sites.

Burning of any wrapping or cartons on site is strictly prohibited.

Reduce/reuse/recycle shall be enforced to meet the EPA’s Pollution Prevention and

Waste Minimization programs.

8) Submittals:

a. Provide electronic copies of product data for the following items to the Contracting Officer, Contracting Officer Representative and Facilities Manager:

• Acrylic glazing panels

• Each type of sealant required

• Aluminum glazing cap

• Each type of fastener required

b. Provide samples for the following items to the Contracting Officer representative and

Facilities Manager:

• Two 12” x 12” samples of acrylic glazing panel

• Two 12” long samples of aluminum glazing cap

c. Contractor is to maintain a Material Submittal Log (See Attachment No. 1). Each submittal shall be added to the log and a copy of the revised log shall be included with each transmittal.

9) Cleanup:

a. Upon completion of re-glazing, thoroughly clean all acrylic surfaces, correct all imperfections, replace all damaged materials, and leave all labels on the glazing panels until they have been inspected and approved by the COR, but remove all labels immediately thereafter.

b. All broken and defective glazing to be replaced on completion of the building.

c. During the construction period, maintain public streets and public walks in and around the site free from excessive dust, mud, and debris.

d. Ensure that parking areas immediately adjacent to greenhouse and within the construction limit line are swept clean and that any screws or metal items are removed.

10) Photographs of the existing installation are below for Contractor’s use. The Contractor is encouraged to perform a pre-bid inspection at the project site.

11) Greenhouse 4 was constructed in 1941 and plans are not available. Contractor shall field verify all existing panel dimensions affecting the installation and shall convey that information via shop drawings for review and approval prior to the start of panel fabrication.

12) Ensure that parking areas immediately adjacent to greenhouse and within the construction limit line are swept clean and that any screws or metal items are removed

1.GENERAL

1.1 WORK INCLUDES

A. Description:

1. Base Bid – Removal, disposal and replacement of all existing greenhouse roof acrylic glazing, trim sealants and accessories for a complete roof installation per glazing manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations.

2. Bid Option #1 – Removal, disposal and replacement of all remaining greenhouse acrylic glazing, trim sealants and accessories at, but not limited to, the sidewalls, vents and doors for a complete glazing replacement installation per glazing manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations.

1.2 EXISTING CONDITIONS

A. Conduct demolition to minimize interference with adjacent building areas.

Maintain protected egress and access at all times.

B. Provide all such security devices as necessary to protect against accidental trespass or accident by falling.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. All manufactured products shall be manufactured and installed in accordance with the respective manufacturer’s published product specifications and installation instructions except as exceeded or otherwise modified herein.

B. Qualifications of installers: Provide at least one person who shall be thoroughly trained and experienced in the skills required, who shall be completely familiar with the referenced standards and the requirements of this work, and who shall personally direct all installations performed under this Section of these Specifications.

C. All work to be carefully executed as to not damage the plants, furnishings, equipment, or any other existing item. Remove and dispose of any debris in and around the greenhouse.

1.4 REFERENCES

A. Manufacturer's catalogs: The acceptable manufacturer's catalogs, current at date of bidding documents, are incorporated by reference to the same force and effect as if repeated herein at length.

1.5 PRODUCT HANDLING

A. Protection:

1. Use adequate means to protect aluminum glazing caps and acrylic glazing panels and accessory items from deformation, defacements or other damage during fabrication, delivery, storage, handling and installation.

2. Store all materials as per manufacturer’s written instructions.

3. Scratches, gouges, and defacements will be cause for rejection of the installed system and replacement shall be the full responsibility of the Contractor at no additional cost to the Government.

1.6 ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

A. Do not demolish or install work during rainy or other adverse weather conditions.

B. Do not install materials at temperatures lower than recommended by respective material manufacturer for the product used.

C. Do not install any Asbestos Containing Products. Verify with manufacturers that no supplied products (whether listed or otherwise) contain asbestos.

D. Contractor shall provide temporary barriers or warning signs announcing construction activity in any adjacent traffic patterns.

2.PRODUCTS

2.1 ACRYLIC GLAZING

A. All acrylic glazing shall be glazed into an aluminum gasketed glazing system approved by the acrylic manufacturer. Glazing system shall provide closure for all edges of acrylic glazing panels. Provisions shall be made within the glazing system to handle expansion and contraction as required by the acrylic manufacturer. The completed glazing system shall provide a rain tight building and to prevent condensation and moisture.

B. All acrylic glazing to bear the label of its manufacturer indicating quality and thickness and compliance to codes and standards where applicable.

C. All glazing to be relatively distortion-free with any distortion waver in the horizontal direction.

D. Weather Resistant Acrylic Glazing Panels:

1. Double Skinned, Clear, Acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate, PPMA) Polymer, 16 mm thickness

2. Light Transmittance 86%

3. R-Value 2.04

4. U-Value 0.49

5. High Impact Hail Resistant

6. Expansion Contraction Rate 5/64 in/ft

7. Flammability ASTM D-635 CC2 or C2

8. Maximum Service Temperature 160° F

9. Warranties:

• Guaranteed Minimum Light Transmission after 10 years 80%

• Damage from Hail 10 Year Warranty

10. No Drip® Coating is to be applied to interior and exterior surfaces.

2.2 ALUMINUM GLAZING CAPS

A. All aluminum glazing caps shall be mill finish extruded with appropriate heat treatment. All extrusions shall have a high inherent resistance to corrosion with a top rating of “A” in corrosion resistance. No castings shall be permitted for joining members at joints subject to stress in which tensile strength is a factor.

B. Aluminum shall be of alloy 6063-T6 or 6063-T5.

C. All fasteners shall be stainless steel hex head screws to match existing gauge.

D. Caps shall extend in one piece from the eave to the ridge and shall be fastened to all existing extrusions.

E. All glazing caps shall be of a “gasketed” type.

1. All glazing gaskets shall be EPDM rubber or other compatible material used in conjunction with the above-mentioned acrylic glazing panels.

2.3 SEALANT

A. All “caulking” or “sealant” for glazing system.

1. Sealant shall be medium modulus, one-part, high performance, neutral cure silicone sealant, color “clear”

a. Acceptable manufacturer:

1. Tremco Spectrum 2

2. Approved equal

B. Primers:

1. If a primer is recommended by the manufacturer of the caulk or sealant for the various surfaces and conditions involved, provide primer recommended by the manufacturer. If the manufacturer’s specifications for a specific material state that a primer is not needed, no primer shall be required.

3.EXECUTION

3.1 DEMOLITION

A. Removal of aluminum caps and existing panels to be performed from the exterior of the building.

B. Remove materials to be reinstalled or retained in manner to prevent damage. Store and protect.

C. Do not burn or bury materials on site.

D. At a minimum, execute daily cleaning to keep the work, the site, and adjacent properties free from accumulation of waste materials, rubbish, and debris.

3.2 INSTALLATION OF ACRYLIC GLAZING

A. Setting of glazing

1. Set glazing in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

2. Maintain manufacturer’s setting tolerance and clearances.

A. Protect aluminum finishes from marring or disfigurement during construction.

B. Apply any foil tape and/or mesh tape as per manufacturer’s guidelines and the National Greenhouse Glazing Manufacturer’s (NGMA) glazing recommendations.

C. Sealants

1. Install sealant at locations indicated on locations recommended by glazing manufacturer.

2. Surfaces to receive the sealant shall be dry, clean, free of loose dirt, dust, oil, grease, or other foreign material before application.

3. Install sealant and any associated primers in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s application instructions, including depth-to-width ratio of joints. Verify with manufacturer the appropriate sealant for installation. Use nozzles sizes which can enter the joints. Apply the material under pressure such as to densely compact the joints continuously and completely full without voids.

4. The installations shall be neat and uniform with no caulking or sealant smeared on adjacent surfaces.

D. All roof sheets shall be free of seams and continuous along the entire roof slope from peak to bottom edge of roof; verify dimensions with existing conditions.

E. All sheets on gable ends shall be free of seams and continuous along the entire length.

3.3 VENT PANELS

A. Contractor to disconnect all vent motor wiring before replacing glazing on vent panels. All electrical work to be done by a qualified electrician. Prior to disconnecting any wiring, the Contractor is required to contact the COR.

Motors are to be reconnected after panel replacement.

B. Vents shall remain operable as much as possible, only to be disconnected as required for panel replacement.

C. Return vents to operable condition immediately upon completion of panel replacement.
