Statement of Work Woods Hole Science Aquarium Suspended Ceiling Renovation
Northeast Fisheries Science Center Woods Hole, MA 02543
(28 May 2020)
SECTION 01
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
A. The NMFS/Northeast Fisheries Science Center is located at 166 Water Street Woods Hole, MA.
02543‐1026.
1. All inquiries are to the attention of Jason Godusky, the Government Representative, who may be contacted at 508.495.2019 or by email at Jason.Godusky@noaa.gov regarding any questions or for a pre‐bid job site inspection.
B. Demolition of existing suspended ceilings, lights, and other work described within the contract documents.
C. Installation of new suspended ceiling system, and other work described within the contract documents.
D. Contractor shall be required to relocate, and/or move any obstacle preventing work from meeting all requirements within the contract documents.
1.02 EXTENT OF WORK
A. Provide all labor, ceiling material, supplies, tools, equipment, and supervision necessary to complete the work described and shown in the drawings, specifications, accordance with the manufacturer’s most current specifications and details to ensure the requirements in the contract documents, meet or exceed best practices as recommended by manufacturer(s), NEC, BOCA, NFPA, UL, ASTM and other standard not specifically listed.
B. The contractor shall be fully knowledgeable of all requirements of the contract documents and shall make themselves aware of all job site conditions that will affect their work.
C. Room dimensions shown on plans are approximate; see appendix A. Two (2) additional hallways are also included in this scope; see photos in appendix B. Contractor is ultimately responsible for the actual dimensions of areas identified.
D. Demolition includes but not limited to:
a. Suspended ceiling tiles and grid,
b. lights,
c. HVAC Supply (5) and return grilles (1),
d. And legally dispose all debris.
E. Alterations includes, but not limited to:
a. Removing wood wall molding along existing ceiling tile above greeter's office,
b. Terminating existing ceiling tile and grid that continues over false walls into adjoin conference room.
F. Supply and install; not limited to:
a. Suspended ceiling tile system,
b. HVAC supply and return grilles,
c. Other requirements as described in the statement of work or as shown on the drawings.
G. Reinstall / Remove components incorporated into existing ceiling grid; (i.e., speakers, access covers, smoke detectors, Camera heads, etc.).
1.03 SUBMITTALS
A. Five (5) working days prior to start of work, the contractor shall submit the following:
a. Manufacturer’s specifications on materials to be used.
1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Deliver materials to the job site in the manufacturer’s original, unopened containers or wrappings with the manufacturer’s name, brand name and installation instructions intact and legible. Deliver in sufficient quantity to permit work to continue without interruption.
B. Comply with the manufacturer’s written instructions for proper material storage and handling.
C. Any materials which are found to be damaged shall be removed and replaced at the contractor’s expense.
1.05 WORK SEQUENCE
A. Care shall be exercised to provide protection for of the building and equipment within the building. Do not disrupt activities in occupied spaces.
1.06 USE OF THE PREMISES
A. Before beginning work, the contractor shall secure approval from the building owner’s representative for the following:
a. Areas permitted for personnel parking,
b. Access to the site,
c. Areas permitted for storage of materials and debris,
d. Security: Obey the owner’s requirements for personnel identification, inspection and other security measures.
1.07 EXISTING CONDITIONS
A. If discrepancies are discovered between the existing conditions and those noted in contract and/or drawings, immediately notify the COTR.
a. Upon receipt of Bidding Documents verify documents are complete. Notify COTR if documents are incomplete. Immediately notify COTR upon finding discrepancies or omissions in Bidding Documents.
1.08 PRE‐BID SITE VISIT
A. Prior to bid submittal, it is highly recommended that the contractor schedules a job site inspection to observe actual conditions and verify all dimensions. Access to the site prior to the closing bid date, the contractor must contact the owner’s representative, Jason Godusky at
508.495.2019 to coordinate an appropriate time. Coordinate site visits at least 72 (three working days) hours in advance of intended site visit. No site visit shall be allowed on the day bids are due.
1.09 FACILITIES AND CONTROLS
A. The contractor shall remove all debris from the job site in a timely and legally acceptable manner so as to not detract from the aesthetics or the functions of the building.
1.10 JOB SITE PROTECTION
A. The contractor shall adequately protect building and site from damage while performing the required work. Provide canvas, boards and sheet metal (properly secured) as necessary for protection and remove protection material at completion. The contractor shall repair or be responsible for costs to repair all property damaged during demolition or construction.
B. During the contractor’s performance of the work, the building owner will continue to occupy the existing building. The contractor shall take precautions to prevent the spread of dust and debris.
The contractor shall provide labor and materials to construct, maintain and remove necessary temporary enclosures to prevent dust or debris in the construction area(s) from entering the remainder of the building.
C. Protect against fire and flame spread. Maintain proper and adequate fire extinguishers within fifty (50) feet of any open flames. If any heated or flamed application is utilized, a 15 pound or larger fire extinguisher shall be within 25 feet of reach or closer at all times.
D. The contractor will work closely with the governments' representative to ensure that the fire protection system is not comprised during initial demolition and throughout construction.
1.11 SAFETY
A. The contractor shall be responsible for all means and methods as they relate to safety and shall comply with all applicable OSHA, NEC, NFPA, EPA 40 CFR Part 745, local, state and federal requirements. Safety shall be the responsibility of the general contractor. All related personnel shall be instructed daily to be mindful of the full time requirement to maintain a safe environment for the facility’s occupants including staff, visitors, customers and the occurrence of the general public on or near the site. Contractor shall comply with the requirements of 29 CFR, Part 1910: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) General Industry and Health Standards and 29 CFR, part 1926 Construction Standards.
B. The contractor shall keep the project site in a neat and orderly condition at all times.
C. Five days prior to start of work contractor shall submit a safety plan. To address, but not limited to, any open flames, debris, cleanup, and emergency procedures.
D. It is the contractor’s responsibility to ensure all employees; subcontractors, vendors, and other company representative adhere to all safety rules, regulations, policies and practices.
1.12 WORKMANSHIP
A. All work shall be of highest quality and in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s published specifications and to the building owner’s satisfaction.
B. There shall be a site superintendent on the job site at all times while work is in progress. Site superintendent shall be an employee of the general contractor. Worker and sub‐contractor shall not be permitted on the site without the presence of the designated site superintendent.
1.13 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Unless otherwise noted in the contract documents, contractor shall comply with the manufacturer’s current specifications and details.
B. Contractor shall provide an adequate number of experienced personnel regularly engaged in this type of work who are skilled in the application techniques of the materials specified and provide at least one thoroughly trained and experienced superintendent on the job at all times when work is in progress. Once the site superintendent has been identified he/she shall remain on the project until completion. Any changes to the site superintendent shall require written notification at least two working days in advance of proposed change.
C. There shall be no deviations made from this specification or the approved shop drawings without the prior written approval of the COTR. Any deviation from the manufacturer’s installation procedures must be supported by a written certification on the manufacturer’s letterhead and presented for the specifier’s consideration.
D. All substitutions requests for products, equipment, materials and methods described within the contract documents shall be submitted to the COTR. Substitutions request are not permitted prior to the Notice to Proceed. Substitute products will be considered when the request is submitted in writing to the COTR. The COTR will have seven (7) working days to approve /disapprove substitution request.
1.14 JOB CONDITIONS, CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS
A. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) must be on location at all times during the transportation, storage and application of hazardous materials. A separate set shall be given to the COTR five (5) days prior to starting of the work.
1.15 WARRANTY
A. Provide manufacturer’s warranty on materials and warranty on all work performed; to cover labor and materials with no dollar limitation.
PART 2 EXECUTION
2.01 GENERAL
A. Comply with the manufacturer’s published instructions for the installation of specified products, and installation requirements per the contract documents.
2.02 CLEAN UP
A. Perform daily clean‐up to collect all wrappings, empty containers, paper, and other debris from the project site. Upon completion, all debris must be disposed of in a legally acceptable manner.

SECTION 09 20 SUSPENDED CEILING/ACCESSORIES
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Drop ceiling supports, drop ceiling tiles, HVAC Supply/Return Grilles.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Submit data on drop ceiling system and HVAC Supply/Return Grilles.
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. ASTM E119 ‐ Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 CEILING ASSEMBLY AND HVAC GRILLES
A. Manufacturers Ceiling Tile
a. Armstrong; Fine Fissured Homestyle or a substitutive product that meets or exceeds their specifications. Must be manufactured in the color of black.
B. Manufactures HVAC Supply and Return Grilles.
a. 1800ceiling; Black plastic perforated tile/return ‐ .080” Thick with ½” perforations or a substitutive product that meets or exceeds their specifications. Must be manufactured in the color of black.
b. HVAC Premium; Drop ceiling HVAC supply Grille – for T‐bar lay‐in – 3 coned – 24” x 24” or a substitutive product that meets or exceeds their specifications. Must be manufactured in the color of black.
2.2 COMPONENTS

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify site conditions are ready to receive work.
3.2 DEMOLITION
A. Remove existing ceiling tiles, grid and all associated hardware/components.
1. All components remaining that are attached to existing ceiling tiles/grid must be temporary secured.
2. Ceiling tiles and grid continuing over false walls must be terminated in a way that does not affect the integrity or appearance of the remaining tiles and grids used in adjoining rooms.
3. Wood trim along existing ceiling tiles around greeter's office must be removed.
4. If feasible, existing vertical hanging wires may be reused.
5. Caution should be taken to prevent the spread of dust; aquatic tanks are located nearby and tops are exposed to room air.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. Install new suspended tile ceiling grid system.
1. Grid system will be complete wall to wall.
2. New grid may be lowered from existing height to accommodate the fastening of wall angle to false walls.
3. The majority of components attached to existing tile/grid will be reinstalled upon installation of new tiles/grid; building owner will identify which components are to be removed.
4. New electrical connections are not required in this contract; however, existing connections that may become detached during the construction prior to reinstalling will be the contractor's responsibility.
5. New suspended tile ceiling grid system and HVAC grilles are completely black. All scratches or cuts in tile or grid made during installation must be black upon completion of construction.
