Scope of Work for McCarthy Farm Safety Improvements I

BACKGROUND

The USDA, ARS, Plant Genetic Resource Unit requires safety improvements at the McCarthy Farm pesticide mixing area and access road. Presently pesticides and herbicides are mixed by employees in open air where winds cause granulated chemicals to become air born and potentially cause injury or illness. Additionally, USDA vehicles and farm equipment entering Pre-Emption Road are at risk of vehicular accidents due to inability to safely accelerate in traffic flow (Ontario County Highway # 6 has speed limit of 55 mph), lack of traction and sufficient approach way. USDA vehicles and farm equipment exiting Pre-Emption Road and entering McCarthy Farm are at risk of rollover due to poor conditions and differing elevations of road and driveway surfaces.

II.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS.

Required safety improvements to the pesticide mixing area and access road of the McCarthy Farm are intended to improve safety and overall working conditions for employees. Relocating pesticide mixing operations inside McCarthy Barn will increase employee and environmental safety by reducing the risk granulated chemicals becoming air borne or being negatively impacted by precipitation and performing the weighing and mixing of chemicals indoors on a concrete pad will provide containment if any spillage were to occur. Improved drainage eliminates surface water which is compromising the structural integrity of existing barn.
