STATEMENT OF WORK FORMAT

Photonis MCP-PMT photon counting detector for NASA Marconi-2 quantum communication demo

June 1, 2021

PR:

Background

NASA is developing Marconi-2 quantum communication demonstration, which requires a photon counting detector operation at room temperature with challenging performance requirement of time jitter, counting efficiency, counting linearity, radiation tolerance, and maxium count rate. Photonis Netherlands B.V is a world leading company for MCP-PMT (micro-channel-plate - photon multiplier tube) for science and industry use. The MCP-PMT 184-8283A0 from Photonis is the only such detector meets all of challenging specification.

Scope

The scope of this work includes procure, testing and qualification of the photon counting detector for Marconi 2 quantum communication applications

1. 4 MCP PMTs will be procured from the vendor Photonis

2. In house (GSFC) detector characterization will be performance for baseline detector perform, and validate the detector performance specifications

3. Radiation test will be conducted for these detectors

4. After radiation performance characterization will be conducted for verification of the detector radiation performance affect as part detector qualification program.

Detector performance requirements:

Parameter Value Unit diameter 8 mm

MCP Linearity (75%) 35 MHz

Dark count rate 30 kcps

Rise time 80 ps

Time Jitter, TTS 15 ps

Spectral range 400 to 900 nm

Quantum efficiency Average of range of 520 to 800 nm 17 %

MCP Linearity 35 MCPS

Time Jitter (RMS) 15 ps
