SCOPE
This Statement of Work (SOW) defines the requirements to perform repair, overhaul, and conversion of the J85-GE-5 and J85-GE-100A engines in support of the United States Navy (USN) BQM-34S Subsonic Aerial Target.
Background The BQM-34 Firebee Target was originally powered using a Continental J69 turbojet. When the Navy modernized the Firebee line in the mid-to-late 1980s, the J85-GE-100A was used. The J-85-100A engine is a modified variant of the J-85-5 engine. In general, the modification consists of removing the afterburner section, applying corrosion-resistant coatings to critical components, repositioning the accessory gearbox 180 degrees, fabricating new fuel and oil lines, and installing an inlet adapter ring and a non-afterburner exhaust cone. These modifications enable the J85-GE-100A engine to fit properly within the target nacelle while maintaining required performance and reliability. The J85-GE-100A provides the target with increased thrust up to 2,450 lbf, allowing the BQM-34S to operate at speeds up to Mach 0.9, reach altitudes up to 45,000 ft, and execute high-G maneuvers (up to 5G) to replicate modern tactical jet threats. The extra thrust also allows the BQM-34S to support heavier internal payloads.
The USN plans to procure a minimum of 100 new targets as part of the new production effort known as the BQM-34S Strengthen Target Inventory New Growth (STING) program. The STING program carries an inventory of J85-GE-100A and J85-GE-5 engines that require either repair, overhaul, and/or conversion.
