Project Statement of Work of Buffered Peptone Water (BPW), Modified UVM Broth (UVM) and Modified Tryptic Soya Broth (mTSB).

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

The FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) Laboratories perform regulatory testing of meat, poultry, and egg products for the presence of food borne pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Shiga toxin producing E. coli.

These test methods require the use primary enrichment media to initiate the growth and recovery of the target bacteria. The FSIS Field Service Laboratories (FSL) use large volumes of enrichment media on a daily basis. The three most used media are being combined into a single solicitation. These media are: Buffered Peptone Water (BPW), Modified UVM Broth (UVM) and Modified Tryptic Soya Broth (mTSB).

2.0 Background

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), a public health regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Agricultural (USDA), protects consumers by ensuring that meat, poultry, Siluriformes fish, and processed egg products are safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled. The FSLs, located in Saint Louis MO, Athens GA, and Albany CA are regulatory laboratories that analyze meat, poultry, Siluriformes fish, and pasteurized egg products to ensure they are free from adulteration.
