| 2.5.1. | Spinal Cord Injury Rehab Van | |
| Quantity: 1 | ||
| Basis of Design: 2023 Chrysler Pacifica |
| Toyota Functional Requirements: |
| The RMR Spinal Cord Injury Center serves some of the most medically complex patients and the Driver |
Rehabilitation Program needs a van that can be converted for bariatric wheelchair accessibility and adaptive driving controls. A minivan with a 14” lowered floor is necessary in order to accommodate patients of varying heights while seated in their wheelchairs. A minivan with less internal space will accommodate shorter individuals but not taller individuals. The Toyota van with VMI in-floor ramp conversion offers the most wheelchair turning radius comparable to other conversions. Varying styles of driving equipment are also necessary to meet the needs of patients with varying levels of disability. Standard hand controls will meet the needs of most paraplegics, as well as a 6-way seat to aid with patient transfers from their wheelchairs to the driver’s seat (crash-tested), and a removable driver seat to allow patients to drive from their wheelchair.
Steering devices vary in design to accommodate varying degrees of strength and coordination. They include a standard knob for someone with normal grip function, a pin grip for mild grip weakness, a “V” grip for moderately limited grip strength, a tri-pin for zero grip function, and a clam shell for zero grip but limited forearm supination.
Various mirrors are necessary for strategic placement in the vehicle for those patients with limited neck and torso range of motion, to allow sight around the vehicle.
A gated shifter allows operation of a standard shifter for a patient with limited grip strength. Adapted turn signal levers allow right hand operation of the standard turn signal or easier operation with the left hand, positioning it closer to the hand control.
Patients will need to be secured in their wheelchairs, their wheelchairs need to be secured to the vehicle floor, and a receptacle must be available for the vehicle seatbelt. Appropriate equipment for these purposes: seat belt extension, rigid riser seat belt receptacle, wheelchair securement system, and three different sizes of torso positioning belts. Striker plates cover the standard vehicle seat securement slots with a flat cover so that a wheelchair can be secured in that area.
