Statement of Work for Phase 2 LIBS Pit Volume Sensor (LPVS) Vendor: MacDonal Dettwiler and Associates Inc

Background

Goddard Space Flight Center has been tasked on a DALI award PI’d by Dr. Barbara Cohen to bring the KArLE measurement concept to TRL 6 in support of future Moon and Planetary spaceflight missions. The KArLE instrument concept requires for a particular collected sample (among other measurements) that micropits are made on it for Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). A LIBS Pit Volume Sensor (LPVS) is then needed to scan the sample before and after pits are made in order to identify the location and volume of the micropits.

This work is a continuation of a earlier phase 1 concept study with GSFC, and in this procurement the below scope description would be the goal of the second phase of this effort ultimately working towards another phase where a TRL 6 capable unit was built.

Scope

For this phase of the effort the vendor shall do the following with a bread board LVPS:

• Confirm and if necessary update the optical design with NASA’s input from the system side,

• Design, procure, fabricate and assemble all necessary components needed for the LVPS testbed,

• Test software for control, user interface and data processing,

• Verify the component performance (laser spot size, camera image resolution),

• Study calibration procedure with NASA provided calibration artifacts,

• Conduct verification test on NASA samples that are measured by a confocal scanning laser microscope,

• Create a summary report of the results from the above activities.

The LVPS shall meet the following design requirements (to be reviewed and confirmed at the kickoff meeting):

• Measure a pit with o Area: 0.5mm x 0.5mm o Pit depth: 1mm o Accuracy volume: <10% precision, <5% desired

• Standoff distance: 15cm from rock surface, with 1-2cm of uncertainty

• Total coarse scanning area: 6mmx6mm, containing 4x4 matrix of pits, separated by

1.5mm center to center

• Depth variation of coarse scan: 5mm

• Coarse scan resolution: 100μm in both lateral and depth

• Measure a rock surface has rough profile and wide range reflectivity

• Acquisition speed: in minutes as goal

Phase 2-B modification scope addition:

Considering performance from bread board testing to date, GSFC and MDA agree that a camera and diode source for that will meet future environmental testing need to be procured in order to adequately meet the goals of the KArLE DALI. MDA shall commence procurement of critical long lead items including the camera/image sensor (3D Plus) and the 405 nm laser diode (custom). The remaining scope from the original award are unchanged.

Deliverables or Delivery Schedule

The deliverables for the Phase 2 activities shall consist of:

Due 10 days ARO – Kickoff meeting

Due monthly – Cost, schedule, and technical status reports, which can be delivered electronically or a meeting

Due at the end of the project –

• The optical and mechanical models for the LPVS that also identify preliminary interfaces (electrical, GSE, mechanical, and optical) for a more mature instrument

• A test report and technical summary that describes the LPVS concept, functionality, and test performance specifically when testing a sample for overall topography, identification of pits, and characterzations of the pit depth. The report will address all the items in the above scope.

New delivery for phase 2-B modification

• Ordering of LPVS camera and laser diode for us in environmental testing

• Deliverables from the original PR are unchanged and labor support levels should continue at the same rate

Government-Furnished Equipment and Government-Furnished Information

• Test samples (various ~1cm sized materials with laser pits in them) to be measured by the LVPS. The materials will be safe for shipment and in no way space flight critical. Exact materials will be determined at the kickoff meeting
