About this file

This statement of work outlines partial funding support for the core activities of the Board on Human-Systems Integration at the National Academy of Sciences for fiscal year 2023-2024. The Board was established to assist federal agencies including NASA on issues of national policy concerning human-systems integration. As core activities, the Board selects study areas, develops committees and workshops, selects participants, reviews studies and reports, and disseminates results. Partial sponsorship of the Board's core activities will provide NASA with access to Board meetings, receipt of meeting minutes, outreach to staff on human systems topics, an option to convene a special task force on a NASA topic of interest, acknowledgement as a sponsor in Board products, opportunities to partner with other sponsors on new activities and help shape topics, and coordination with other National Academies units. The period of performance is from November 1, 2023 through October 31, 2024 at the National Academy of Sciences facilities in Washington, DC.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Objective/Requirements The Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI) was established to better equip the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in its efforts to assist the federal government concerning issues of national policy. BOHSI is an integrative force for the sciences within human-systems integration (HSI); it directly benefits these sciences by (1) involving academic research scientists in the consideration of policy issues; (2) involving the relevant research community in cross-disciplinary inquiry; (3) providing forums for the exchange of ideas and information; and (4) advancing the HSI sciences within the National Academies and through the Board’s relationships with Congress, and many federal agencies. As core activities, BOHSI selects areas for study, develops committees or workshops, selects participants, reviews study activities and reports, and widely disseminates study results. This contract is for partial funding of BOHSI’s core activities for one year and is renewable.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs Partial sponsorship of the core activities of BOHSI shall make it possible for BOHSI to provide the following types of services to NASA:

• access to BOHSI for a block of time at each of its meetings to discuss issues of interest to NASA.

• receipt of meeting minutes for both the Spring and Fall BOHSI Board meetings.

• active outreach to other relevant NASA staff to participate in seminars and open sessions that feature discussion of human systems integration topics with wide applicability to NASA.

• an option of convening a special task force or seminar attached to a board meeting (a subset of BOHSI membership plus possible other experts) to address a topic of interest to NASA.

• acknowledgement as a BOHSI sponsor in all products of the Board, even though other sponsors may have had the primary funding responsibilities.

• the opportunity to partner with other sponsors easily on new activities (e.g., such as joint seminars), and help shape those topics.

• the opportunity to interact with other human-systems integration staff in other federal agencies and to partner with other sponsors easily, as the existence of BOHSI makes new activities less expensive and more efficient than if an activity had to be created each time.

• coordination of activities related to interests that NASA may have with other National Academies units, particularly within the Division of Behavioral and Social Science and Education but also with other Divisions.

• involvement in shaping board activities, future studies and initiatives, and advocating for HSI within the Academies (BOHSI is the home of HSI at the Academies).

• access to the Academies’ network of experts across fields and external reach.

• copies of every report produced under the aegis of the Board and agendas for all meetings.

3. Place of Performance

National Academy of Sciences, 500 Fifth Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

4. Period of Performance Services shall be performed November 1, 2023 through October 31, 2024.
