1.0 Background
NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center - Code 530 has a need for a low cost sUAS for flight test research. Prior attempts to bring about this capability led to poor results because of poor quality and no customer service. Applied Aeronautics is a small sUAS manufacturer that developed a custom built UAS called the Albatross. This sUAS can satisfy many of the requirements that Code 530 has for this type of research. The first is that it’s built in the US and satisfies NDAA compliance for flying on Edwards Air Force base and contains no Chinese components. The second requirement is for good customer service, part of purchase will pay for customer service and our initial conversations were excellent. They answered our questions for free and provided documentation on their products. The third and final requirement was the ability to make modifications and customize the software and configurations. The development team at Applied Aeronautics were familiar with these mods and had done similar work for other customers. This gives a lot of confidence that they will be able to build the sUAS to our specifications.
2.0 Objectives
The purchase of Albatross UAS kit and accessories. See attached quote for more specific information.
This product will be used to conduct flight research specifically testing flight software and algorithms.
Additionally with the custom modifications, the sUAS will be able to test NASA sensor payloads.
