About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for a Fe-Ta (ferro-tantalum) master alloy procurement. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center seeks 70 pounds of a Fe-20wt.% Ta master alloy cast into 1-1.125 inch diameter rods or supplied as pieces. The alloy must be vacuum melted and homogeneous with minimal impurities. A certificate of chemical analysis must be provided for the master heat. Efforts should be made to minimize inclusions through vacuum melting and ensure homogeneity without unmelted refractory content. The master heat will be supplied in the as-cast condition without further processing, though pieces are acceptable if brittleness prevents full rod casting.

Fe-Ta (ferro-tantalum) Master Alloy Statement of Work & Requirements
Introduction:
This procurement is for Fe-Ta pre-alloyed feedstock. Final form should be rod/bar stock (1” - 1.125” diameter (length of individual bars is not critical) or pieces. The material will be used as master alloys in our planar-flow melt spin facility. As these are experimental alloys, there are no commercial standards or specifications to which the material can be stated. Therefore, we are looking for companies with demonstrated, successful experience in producing similar alloys in bulk, that are homogenous, clean (with minimal Ca, Mg, Ti, Al, S impurities), with low inclusion content, suitable for melt spinning without clogging the melt spin nozzle.
Statement of Work:
Item 1.) 70 lbs. of Fe-Ta master alloy: Fe-20wt.% Ta. Cast into 1” - 1.125” diameter rod or supplied as pieces. The material should be vacuum melted.
Requirements:
1. Alloys should be clean, homogeneous, and with very low inclusion content, sufficient so that nozzle clogs do not occur during melt spinning. Impurities, such as Ca, Mg, Ti, Al, S, etc., will need to be at kept at minimal levels.
2. A single heat will be prepared for the item above, formulated using virgin melt stock. A certificate of chemical analysis will be supplied for the master heat.
3. Melting to be performed under vacuum to minimize oxide inclusion content. Every effort should be made to minimize ceramic or other inclusions and ensure that the melt is homogeneous without unmelted refractory metal content, which will block the nozzle and cause failure during melt spinning.
4. The master heat will be cast/recast as 1” – 1.125” diameter rod and supplied in the as-cast condition. No other secondary processing required. Rods do not need to be of any particular length if the alloy turns out to be too brittle to cast as a complete rod, pieces of any length are acceptable.
