Statement of Work
Installation of Dirty Vacuum Chamber into NASA Glenn Research Center building 5 room 155/156
General Description
NASA GRC is establishing a new test capability that will enable a combination of Thermal- Vacuum (TVAC) and dirty / dusty conditions found on Solar System bodies such as the Moon, Mars, and Asteroids. This test facility is an assembly containing the vacuum chamber, control system, filter, turbomolecular pump, and support cart. The nominal dimensions of this assembly are 85” H x 78” W x 94” L with an empty weight of approximately 4,000 lbs (figure 1).
The assembly will be located in test cell 155 of Building 5 on the GRC campus. Access to this test cell is through an exterior double-doorway shown in figure 2). The exiting load rating of the floor in this test cell is insufficient to support the assembly and anticipated test hardware and space simulates that will be tested in the chamber. A permanent and temporary structural platform has been designed to distribute the floor loads during installation of the assembly and permanent operation of the TVAC test unit.
NASA GRC is seeking fabrication and installation of structural platforms to support the weight of the assembly during installation and permanent operation of the assembly, removal of temporary platforms and necessary support structures, and the permanent installation of the assembly into test cell 155 – building 5 onto the structural platform. No electrical connections, air, gas, or liquid connections to the facility are included with this statement of work.
Facility Interface The contractor must comply with all facility interfaces and restrictions such as but not limited to:
• Maintaining emergency egress capability for existing building occupancy and operations during construction and installation
• Securing appropriate access to building driveways and doors
• Maintaining structural integrity of exterior stairs and loading dock
• Ensuring that floor loading limits are not exceeded during all phases of the work
Relevant Experience / Specialized Knowledge
Contractors shall document relevant past experience in the movement, relocation, and installation of precision equipment having equivalent weight, dimensions, and shock sensitivity as the TVAC assembly shown in figure 1. Previous experience in equivalent work at the NASA GRC facility is highly preferred.
The contractor shall:
• Fabricate 1 new chamber support platform, including the temporary install platform shown in figure 3 o Provide all material for both support and temporary platform o Fabricate both the permanent and permanent platforms according to NASA drawings o Furnish all fasteners as required for a complete assembly including anchorage to existing floor slab o Prime, finish paint, deliver, and install into room 155, spanning appropriate structural members shown in figure 4
• Shore the existing loading dock slab as required to complete the installation without damage to existing property
• Transport the dirty vacuum chamber from temporary storage at GRC to 5-155
• Off load the new chamber and move into the building
• Set, align, and level the test chamber in its final location on the new support frame
• Dis-assemble the temporary platform and remove from the work site
• Remove shoring from the existing loading dock
• Clean-up worksite and de-mobilize contractor equipment
