About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for laboratory reagents and supplies to support epidemiological research conducted by the Bacteriology Department of the U.S. Naval Medical and Research Unit SOUTH. The research focuses on spatial analysis of enteric disease data and the epidemiology of infectious diarrhea, which poses significant mission risk to deployed military personnel. The primary objective is to characterize the incidence, prevalence, and clinical spectrum of gastrointestinal illness and associated enteropathogens in a traveler population in Cusco, Peru, who serve as suitable surrogates for U.S. military personnel in diarrhea-endemic regions. This research aims to support the development of effective countermeasures, including vaccines against common enteropathogens such as ETEC, Campylobacter, and Shigella species, and to monitor the etiology and population dynamics of respiratory illness.

The solicitation BAC260011_N3239826PA018, issued by the Department of the Navy Naval Supply Systems Command, requests laboratory reagents and supplies for conducting these mission-essential research tasks. Required items include bacteriological media (agar bottles, Mueller Hinton agar, MacConkey agar), molecular biology reagents (RT-PCR grade water, QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit, AGPATH ID RT-PCR kit), diagnostic supplies (HydraFlock swabs, culture transport systems), and laboratory consumables (96-well reaction plates, optical tube strip caps, loading tips, and screening reagents). Materials are to be shipped to Cavalier Logistics in Dulles, Virginia. The requisition specifies exact quantities and catalog numbers for each item, indicating a specific procurement requirement rather than a framework or blanket purchase agreement.

STATEMENT OF WORK

The Bacteriology Department of the U.S. Naval Medical and Research Unit SOUTH conducts spatial analysis of epidemiological data from enteric diseases for surveillance activities.

Infectious diarrhea remains a major threat to deployed military forces worldwide, in addition to their impact on travelers and populations (predominantly children) living in the developing world. Despite advances in our understanding of the incidence, prevalence, and biology of infectious diarrhea, obstacles remain to the development of effective countermeasures. Due to the mission-aborting potential of diarrhea disease, the U.S. military has placed a high priority on the development of an effective vaccine against the most common enteropathogens associated with travelers’ diarrhea like ETEC, Campylobacter and Shigella species. However, prior to any vaccine clinical trial, a better understanding of the true incidence of disease and better characterization of the true clinical spectrum of disease in respect to etiology should occur.

Multiple reagents and other supplies are needed to run tests in different instruments such as Phoenix, Maldi Biotyper to understand the epidemiology and burden of gastrointestinal illness and associated enteropathogens in a traveler’s population in Cusco, Peru who will serve as suitable surrogates for deployed United States military personnel as related to the acquisition of infectious diarrhea and prevention thereof in diarrhea endemic regions and monitor etiology and population dynamics of respiratory illness among a traveler population in Cusco, Peru
