1. GENERAL:

This contract is required to maintain the 412 Electronic Warfare Group’s (EWG) Maintenance &

Logistics Operations Division ability to support current and future aircraft testing here at the

Avionics Test & Integration Complex (ATIC), Edwards Air Force Base, California.

2. BACKGROUND

2.1. The basic door system was designed, manufactured, and provided by Ferguson Door Company and the RF shielding portion was designed, manufactured, and provided by Ray Proof Shielding

Systems in 1988. The RFI shielded door is a single free standing horizontal sliding door leaf

200’ 10” wide by 65’ 11” high by 11’ 5” thick structure. Subsequent operational issues with the door have occurred resulting in multiple reports and repair efforts that this report will not attempt to summarize. This report will focus on the pneumatic seal bladder leak and any additional

2.2. The initial shielding system on the door has three continuous redundant rows of pneumatic inflatable seals (G-1-2 Mod). The seals are located on the door jambs, sill, and header of the chamber. Over each pneumatic seal are two rows of beryllium copper (BE-CU) finger stock. In between the two rows is a 1.5” wide wire electromesh. The two layers of finger stock are staggered (shingled). The finger stock and wire mesh are secured to the chamber with a 1” steel flat bar. When the pneumatic inflatable seals are inflated, they push against the finger stock/wire electromesh and mate with the door system to provide an RF seal.

3. OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES:

3.1. While inflated, the chamber shielding integrity is maintained if the compressor motor can keep pressure in the leaking bladder. Continuous use of the door will likely cause the motor to continue to run and ultimately fail. It is recommended that the leaks be repaired. Repairs would be conducted as follows:

Source new bladder

Mobilize crew to BAF w/tools, supplies, replacement bladder and parts

Open door to expose door header to gain access to leak area

Remove steel flat bar covering seal system

Remove beryllium copper (BE-CU) finger stock and wire electromesh

Extract bladder from cavity

Mark and cut a 4’ section of the bladder and discard

Prep ends of existing section and new sections for

Install new section into existing section

Test for leak

Reinstall bladder, finger stock, wire electromesh

Reinstall steel bar

Return door to close position, latch and seal

Monitor the pressure at the pneumatic compressor to confirm no leaks
