U.S. Embassy Program Strategic Goals and Objectives
The U.S. Department of State, U.S. Embassy Banjul announces an Open Competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects that support capacity activities for local civil society organizations (CSOs). Subject to the availability of funding, a grant of up to $500,000 U.S. Dollars in FY 2023 Economic Support Funds (ESF) will be awarded for work that will build the capacity of CSOs which will enable them to effectively engage the government and hold them accountable, help fight corruption and educate the public on key social and human rights issues.
| U.S. Embassy Program Background and Description |
| The proposed project aims to promote the capacity of civil society organizations to effectively engage the government to inform and influence policy, hold the government accountable, help fight corruption, inform the public about potential legislation, and educate the public on key social and human rights issues. The project will be two-fold: 1) support the burgeoning networks of civil society organizations in building capacity in communications, financial management, proposal writing, human resources, and resiliency and 2) to raise awareness on corruption, recently passed anti-corruption legislation and advocate for government transparency. |
While Gambian CSOs do not lack purpose or drive, organization generally lack the capacity to obtain and implement funding and other resources, develop effective communication strategies, effectively coordinate with partners, and support resiliency of workers who can face cyber-bullying, ostracization from community members, and death threats. Although assistance opportunities exist, local CSOs often are not competitive with international NGOs for this funding. Since the Gambian CSOs are not awarded funding, they continue the cycle of an underdeveloped capacity.
