STATEMENT OF WORK
N671000-20-01344
TITLE: Fifth Generation (5G) Cellular Communications Training
LAB REQUESTING SERVICE: Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL)
I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
CTL personnel require 5G cellular communications training on Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 15 and 16 standards and implementation. The training will enable CTL personnel to perform research in accordance with CTL goals.
II. SCOPE
The Contractor shall provide training on 5G for up to twenty (20) students. The training will be divided into two classes as detailed below. Students from other Department of Commerce agencies may participate with the costs for those agencies born by the individual agencies. The training course will be held at NIST facilities in Boulder, Colorado. The Contractor shall provide an instructor onsite and training materials (textbooks). Training is to be scheduled for a maximum of four (4) consecutive days class time. Specific dates to be determined within fourteen (14) days of award.
III. OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, the students shall be familiar with and able to accomplish the following objectives:
a. 5G New Radio (NR) Air Interface
1. Illustrate the architecture of the Next Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN)
2. Describe the frame structure with numerology of the air interface
3. List downlink and uplink signals and channels and describe their function
4. Identify key steps of network acquisition, random access, and connection setup
5. List main steps of registration, network slice selection, and PDU session setup
6. Give examples of QoS parameters in 5G
7. Explain how data is transferred in the downlink and the uplink
8. Differentiate between the connected mode mobility and the idle/inactive mode mobility
b. 5G Networks and Services
1. Sketch 5G core (5GC) network architecture and identify network functions
2. Sketch 5G RAN architecture and split architecture of gNB
3. Describe various interfaces and related protocols of 5G end-to-end network
4. Step through the life of a 5G device to understand key operations of 5G
5. Identify technologies such as network slicing, edge computing, virtualization and orchestration
6. Summarize the deployment status of 5G
c. 5G Voice Solutions
1. Sketch the architecture for voice services in 5G
2. Describe the VoNR and EPS fallback services
3. Illustrate the signaling flow for VoNR calls in 5G
4. Describe the codecs used for VoNR
5. Sketch the signaling procedures for EPS fallback
6. Identify call flows for emergency services in 5G
