Naval Postgraduate School

1.0 Background/Introduction:

Internet2 is a member-owned advanced technology community founded by the nation’s leading higher education institutions in 1996. Internet2 provides a collaborative environment where US research and education organizations can solve common technology challenges and develop innovative solutions in support of their educational, research and community service missions. Membership also provides access to pre-negotiated agreements and discounted pricing for Advanced Networking services, Cloud Services & Applications, Trust & Identity services and Performance & Analytics services.

InCommon operates the identity management federation (through Internet2 Trust & Identity services) for U.S. research and education, and their sponsored partners. The federation provides a common framework for trusted shared management of access to online resources. Through InCommon, Identity Providers can give their users single sign-on convenience and privacy protection, while online Service Providers control access to their protected resources.
