About this file

This Statement of Requirements (SOR) details the Naval Postgraduate School's (NPS) procurement of a new optical microscope for the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department. The required system comprises four primary components: a primary microscope with advanced imaging capabilities (brightfield, darkfield, polarized light, differential interference contrast modes), a digital camera with USB 3.0 connectivity and high-resolution (1920 x 1080) capabilities, a Windows 11-compatible computer with sufficient GPU and CPU performance, and accompanying image analysis software capable of grain size, porosity, and phase analyses.

The microscope must include five objective lenses (2X to 100X magnifications), an adjustable binocular eyepiece, built-in power source, LED or halogen light source, and reflector cubes for polarization and differential interference contrast modes. Delivery is specified for 9/30/2025 to the NPS Warehouse in Monterey, California, with deliveries accepted Monday through Friday between 0700-1130 and 1230-1600 PST. The procurement aims to replace an aging Nikon Epiphot 200 microscope and will primarily support student, staff, and faculty research involving metallic, ceramic, polymeric, composite, and mineralogical sample imaging.

Statement of Requirements New Optical Microscope

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Naval Postgraduate School

1.0 Background/Introduction:

The MAE department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) owns an inverted metallurgical optical microscope. The microscope is a Nikon Epiphot 200, which is still functional. The microscope, however, is old and finding replacement parts is increasingly difficult. This is especially problematic as Nikon no longer manufactures optical microscopes. To compliment and eventually replace the Nikon optical microscope, we seek a new inverted and/or metallurgical optical microscope. The new microscope will be used in the same way as the Nikon, primarily by students, but also by staff and faculty for their classwork and research. The microscope should be one that can image metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and composite samples. The microscope should also allow for imaging of mineralogical samples. It should come with software capable of both hardware control and imaging analysis.

Description

1 1 EA Primary microscope:

- Optical microscope must have the capability to image in brightfield, darkfield, polarized light, and differential interference contrast modes.

- The microscope must have an objective turret with at least five slots for five different objective lenses and easy switching between these lenses.

- At least five objective lenses with magnifications of 2X to 5X, 10X, 20X, 50X, and 100X are required.

- The microscope must come with a light source that is either halogen or preferably

LED.

- The microscope must come with an adjustable binocular eyepiece to accommodate multiple users.

- It must come with a built-in power source.

- The microscope should come with a reflector cube and analyzer for the polarization mode.

- It must also come with a reflector cube, objective lenses, and prism for DIC mode.

2 1 EA

Camera for the microscope:

- A digital camera that can connect by USB

3.0 to an included computer (item 3) is required.

- The camera should be a high-resolution camera with selectable resolution, minimum 1920 x 1080 (1080p).

- Camera should have a wide dynamic range.

- Camera must be mountable on the microscope.

- Camera should come with a built-in power supply.

3 1 EA

Computer:

- A Windows 11 capable computer is required.

- The computer must have both a sufficiently powerful graphical processing unit, i.e., graphics card or GPU, and CPU.

- It must also come with enough RAM to run microscope software (item #4).

4 1 EA

Software:

- Microscope should come with image analysis software that can control the microscope; process images with standard correction schemes like contrast control;

and allow for image analysis.

- Software should be capable of grain size analysis, porosity, and phases.
