DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE

COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE MISSISSIPPI
10 January 2022
On December 08, 2021, Columbus AFB, MS experienced a storm with heavy lightning.
This storm produced a lightning strike that entered the electrical circuit feeding the Strobe lights and PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator System) guidance system on the north end of our center runway. The damage to these circuits was discovered during our early morning inspection the on December 09, 2021.
The equipment destroyed due to this lightning strike is listed below and is required to restore the system to original operating conditions. CAFB technicians will install all listed material.
1. Power Converters that produces high voltage pulse to the strobe lights. This lighting system guides the jets on approach during inclement weather and at night.

2. Constant Current Regulator drives the current through the circuit from the Lighting Vault out to the strobe light system and the PAPI system.

3. Electronic Control board inside the PAPI controls the tilt switch that guides the jet on approach by communicating the slope angle to the pilot.

4. Transformer receives voltage from the regulator at the vault and allows 6 steps of intensity from the strobe and PAPI lights.
