STATEMENT OF NEED (SON)
1.0 TITLE
Laser Upgrade Package for BD Biosciences FACSAria III Cell Sorter
2.0 BACKGROUND
The LP Research Flow Cytometry Core provides flow cytometric and cell sorting services to NCI CCR investigators in Building 10. The facility currently maintains five cell sorters that all receive frequent use. Most of these instruments are reaching the end of their operational life. The facility is currently retiring two FACSAria IIu cell sorters, since the instruments are no longer eligible for service contract coverage, making them unsuitable for CCR investigator’s uses. To replace these instruments, a late-model FACSAria III cell sorter (2013) has been relocated from NCI’s DCEG to the LP’s facility. While in excellent condition, this FACSAria III currently has only two lasers (blue and red) and eight (8) fluorescence detectors, limiting its usefulness for high-dimensional sorting. Therefore, the LP would like to upgrade this instrument with a third violet laser, six (6) additional detectors, and other electronic components needed to accommodate these items.
