About this file

This document is a Justification for Sole Source procurement for a Sharebot SnowWhite 2 Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printer for the United States Naval Academy (USNA) Engineering Capstone Workshops Makerspace Additive Manufacturing Lab. The procurement seeks a high-precision, user-reconfigurable 3D printer with unique capabilities, including a customizable open parameter system, multi-material printing capability, minimal powder requirement (300 grams), and an advanced N2 camera for real-time process monitoring. The specific package includes the Sharebot SnowWhite 2 SLS 3-D Printer with N2 Camera, Skype Training, Multi-Material Upgrade, Multi-Material Parameter Control Software, Support, Upgrade, and a 1-Year Warranty. Market research confirmed that only Sharebot and Solve Light, LLC are authorized to sell this printer, and Sharebot is not registered in the System for Awards Management (SAM), further justifying the sole source selection.

The complete cost of this system is . The delivery date is tentative, but the products needs to be ordered in time to provide sufficient time for it to arrive and be set up before the Fall academic term begins so that students and faculty can use this equipment for their research projects this coming academic year.

In conclusion, the requested supplies or services represent the minimum requirements of the government.

Describe in detail why only this source can furnish the requirements to the exclusion of other sources.

(what specific characteristics of the supplies or services limit the availability to a sole source (e.g., unique features, function of the item, etc.)?)

☒ A patent, copyright or proprietary data limits competition.

Market research was conducted, the original manufacturer (Sharebot) contacted, and Sharebot confirmed that only they themselves and Solve Light, LLC. are authorized to sell the 3-D printer needed for this requirement.

Further research indicated that Sharebot also is not and never has been registered in the System for Awards Management (SAM).

Additionally, the listed Sharebot SnowWhite 2 SLS printer package has unique features that are needed for faculty and student research at the USNA that other similar printers do not possess. They are –

- Customizable and Open Parameter System: The printer allows users to modify and fine-tune a wide range of printing parameters, unlike most SLS printers that restrict access to predefined settings. This is particularly valuable for research and development to study sintering new materials and material blends. Precise control over the sintering process is needed to test different materials, material interfaces and optimize multi-powder results.

- Multi-Material Printing Capability: Unlike other SLS printers that are optimized for a single type of powder for each print, the SnowWhite 2 is specifically designed to work with multiple materials with dual internal powder chambers. This capability enables greater flexibility for testing and prototyping applications, particularly in environments requiring diverse material properties such as our laboratory.

- Minimal Powder Requirement for Operation: The system can begin to print jobs with as little as 300 grams of powder, significantly reducing material waste and cost when researching new SLS materials. Other SLS printers require much larger material quantities to start a job, making them inefficient for small-scale research and iterative prototyping.

- Advanced Quality Control with N2 Camera: The N2 camera provides real-time monitoring of the sintering process, ensuring precise control and high-quality outputs. This level of process visibility is critical for investigating new sintering parameters and quality assurance for known sintering parameters. This is not found in other SLS printers within the same class and is necessary for our research.
