II. Technical Requirements:

Part 1 General:

1. Summary – Furnish all labor, materials and equipment necessary to repair cracks, spalls, and sections of deteriorated concrete on the Franklin Falls Service Bridge located at the Franklin Falls Dam in Franklin, New Hampshire. See Exhibit A. The Contractor will be responsible for the proper removal and disposal of associated concrete. All products shall be installed in accordance to manufacturer’s or supplier’s recommendations.

2. Existing Conditions:

Components of the bridge structure where cracking, spalling, and deteriorated concrete requiring repairs exist are the deck fascia (See Exhibit F), and deck cracks at the railing posts (See Exhibit G). There is approximately 70 square feet of fascia concrete repair estimated, and approximately 80 linear feet of deck crack repair at the railing posts estimated. The Contractor shall note that the majority of repairs are required in areas where significant fall hazards exist.

a. Site Access:

i. The service bridge may be accessed via Route 127 in Franklin, NH at 46

Granite Drive. The roadway provides access to the Franklin Falls Dam Project Office and Garage complex. Continuing on this roadway will provide access to the crest of the Franklin Falls Dam and to the service bridge. See Exhibit B.

ii. The service bridge provides access from the crest of the dam to the intake structure otherwise known as the Gatehouse.

iii. The entrance to the service bridge is gated and locked. Access shall be provided by the Franklin Falls Dam staff on days when work is being performed.

b. Service Bridge:

i. The load ratings for this bridge limit any 2 axle truck to 20 Tons (Gross

Vehicle Weight) and any 3 axle truck to 30 Tons (Gross Vehicle Weight).

ii. The service bridge was constructed in 1943. The bridge superstructure consists of a 141’-5” deck truss main span (140’-0” center to center of bearings) with a 39’-6 1/8” multi-girder approach span (37’-11” center to center of bearings) and a 5’-11 11/16” reinforced concrete span at the center pier which is monolithically poured with the upper pier stem. The slab cantilevers out on either side of the pier stem to the expansion joints of both the main truss span and the approach span. The total bridge length is 186’-10 13/16”. The bridge substructure consists of one reinforced concrete abutment at the approach span, one reinforced concrete pier and two reinforced concrete corbels that are integral with the Intake Control Tower.

iii. The approach span is supported by the concrete abutment on its easterly (fixed) end and by the concrete pier at its westerly (expansion) end. The three approach span girders are riveted built-up girders spaced at 7’-0” center to center with floor beam channels spaced at 4’-9” center to center.

The girder web depth varies from 3’-7” at mid span to 5’-6 1/4” at the centerline of girder bearings.

iv. The main truss span is supported on the concrete pier at its easterly (expansion) end and on two reinforced concrete corbels, monolithically poured with the support columns at its westerly (fixed) end. Center to center spacing of the trusses is 14’-0” with 11’-8” center-to-center spacing of floor beams. Two longitudinal stringers span between each floor beam at a spacing of 4’-8” center-to-center.

v. Both approach and main span superstructures support an 8” reinforced concrete deck with a curb to curb distance of 12’-6”. Six steel utility conduits run longitudinally along the bridge parallel to the north truss on the main span and between the north and middle girders of the approach span. These conduits start from the abutment back wall, pass through the pier stem, and terminate at the control tower wall. The utilities are supported on timber blocking and angles that hang from eyebolts clamped to the main span and approach span floor beam bottom flanges.

vi. Recent concrete repairs were made on the bridge and associated concrete piers in 2018. The contract included the repair of similar spalls, cracks and deteriorated concrete on the bridge deck fascia, the cracks at the deck railings, and a number of bridge piers. The work on the bridge deck fascia and the cracks at the deck railings was only completed on the South facing side of the bridge. The work described in this contract will address the repairs needed for the North facing side of the bridge.
