NOTES
PURPOSE OF HOLE:
To determine subsurface geologic conditions, obtain SPT and vane shear data, collect intact samples, collect soil samples for laboratory analyses, and depth to groundwater.
Foundation conditions will be used to design and update the trash rake monorail at the Tracy Fish Collection Facility (TFCF).
LOCATION:
South side of the TFCF monorail bridge spanning the Old River, approximately 15 miles southwest of Stockton, California and less than a mile south of the Clifton Court Forebay.
DRILLED BY:
Bureau of Reclamation: CPN Region drill crew:
Dan Read, driller Kyler Wallin, helper Jeff Carrick, helper
DRILL RIG:
CME-850 track mounted rig
DRILLING AND SAMPLING METHODS :
Drill hole was advanced using flight auger pilot bit (FAPB) and flight auger dry core (FADC) systems.
FAPB was used to advance the lead auger between depths of 0.0 to 4.4 feet, which then allowed for FADC advancement. FAPB consisted of 4-1/4 inch i.d. by 8 inch o.d. hollow stem augers equipped with an 8-1/2 inch o.d. lead auger bit containing six carbide bullet teeth around the rim, and a 4-1/4 inch o.d. pilot bit with three carbide bullet teeth attached to NWJ rods and set inside the lead drill bit. FAPB is a closed system and does not allow for collection of core.
FADC was used to advance the drill hole and collect soil core from 4.4 to 99.5 feet. FADC utilizes the same augers as FAPB. Instead of using a pilot bit, FADC uses a 3-1/4 inch i.d. by 3-5/8 inch o.d. by 5-foot-long split barrel dry coring system. NWJ rods were attached to a free spinning bearing assembly, which is attached to the FADC barrel. The bearing assembly allows for the FADC barrel to remain stationary while the augers rotate and advance the hole. The barrel's cutting shoe extended 0.15 feet beyond the lead auger bit. Both a metal and plastic "basket" was used in the cutting shoe to assist with retention of core.
SPT was performed at 5.0-foot intervals (only when undisturbed samples and vane shear tests were not required) from 7.5 feet to 101.0 feet. SPT consisted of a 1-3/8 inch i.d.
by 2 inch o.d by 2-foot-long split spoon sampler driven 1.5 feet. The sampler was attached to NWJ rods that weight about 57.5 lbs/10 feet. The sample was advanced with an auto-hammer (140 pound weight with a 30-inch drop). The auto-hammer energy was last measured in August 2021, resulting in a 90.4% energy correction (drill rig engine at 1280 rpm with auto-hammer rate at 53 blows per minute). A plastic basket trap was placed in the cutting shoe to assist with sample retention for SPT intervals below 17.5 feet.
Use of such a device may increase penetration resistance. Blow counts presented in this log are uncorrected field values.
Undisturbed (intact) soil samples A through C were collected within steel (Shelby) tubes using a GUS hydraulic piston sampler. The Shelby tube is bolted to a cylinder over a stationary piston, and the cylinder and tube are advanced by hydraulic (water) pressure. A pump and the drill rig's water delivery system were used to hydraulically activate the GUS sampler. The sampler is rated for 600 psi. The pump's pressure relief blow-off valve was set to 550 psi. The GUS sampler was not advanced to its full 2.05 feet of interior length whenever the pump pressure relief blow-off valve activated. The GUS sampler has a fail-safe pressure relief system that releases hydraulic pressure to prevent over sampling. The GUS sampler was advanced to its full interior length whenever its pressure relief system activated. Nominal Shelby tube dimensions: 3-inch o.d. by 2.5 feet long.
Refer to the appropriate Technical Memorandum for results of strength testing and physical properties testing of intact samples.
Vane shear testing was performed by TSC and CGB Geology using a 1.5-inch long by 1.5-inch wide vane. Refer to the appropriate Technical Memorandum for shear strength values.

NOTES
PURPOSE OF HOLE:
To determine subsurface geologic conditions, obtain SPT and vane shear data, collect intact samples, collect soil samples for laboratory analyses, and depth to groundwater.
Foundation conditions will be used to design and update the trash rake monorail at the Tracy Fish Collection Facility.
LOCATION:
West bank of the Old River, approximately 15 miles southwest of Stockton, California and less than a mile south of the Clifton Court Forebay.
DRILLED BY:
Bureau of Reclamation: CPN Region drill crew:
Kyler Wallin, driller Dan Read, helper Sam Thomas, helper
DRILL RIG:
CME-850 track mounted rig
DRILLING AND SAMPLING METHODS :
Drill hole was advanced using flight auger pilot bit (FAPB) and flight auger dry core (FADC) systems.
FAPB was used to advance the lead auger between depths of 0.0 to 7.5 feet, which then allowed for FADC advancement.
FADC was used to advance the drill hole and collect soil core from 7.5 to 100.0 feet.
SPT was performed at 5.0-foot intervals (only when undisturbed samples and vane shear tests were not required) from 7.5 to 101.5 feet.
Undisturbed (intact) soil samples A through E were collected within steel (Shelby) tubes using a GUS hydraulic piston sampler.
DRILLING CONDITIONS:
Notable drilling condition and notes:
0.0 to 7.5 ft.: Pilot bit interval to seat augers.
