SECTION B – OVERVIEW

B-1 PURPOSE OF CONTRACT:

1.1 GENERAL: This performance based work statement describes the requirements to provide

Referral Laboratory Cytology, Pathology, and Histology Testing Services for Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS) facilities. Federal Acquisition Ciru

1.2 BACKGROUND: The Indian Health Service (IHS) is an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The provision of health services to members of federally recognized tribes grew out of the special relationship between the federal government and Indian tribes. The IHS is the principal health care provider and health advocate for the Indian people. The IHS goal is to assure that accessible health care services are available to the American Indian and Alaska Natives. The IHS currently provides health services to approximately 1.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives, who belong to 557 federally, recognized tribes in 34 states.

The NAIHS administers health care to approximately 300,000 tribal members of the Navajo Nation, through various health centers and hospital facilities, and outpatient/outreach programs. The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian tribe in the Unites States and has the largest reservation that encompasses more than 25,000 square miles throughout northern Arizona, western New Mexico and southern Utah.

There is a need to supplement and augment the cytology, pathology, and histology laboratory testing services not available in most NAIHS facilities. There are greater needs felt by the remote and rural areas served by the NAIHS.

B-2 FEE SCHEDULE: The Contractor shall be compensated at a fixed unit price listed for

Referral Laboratory Cytology, Pathology, and Histology Testing Services provided in accordance with the Performance Work Statement (PWS).
