STATEMENT OF WORK/REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT
Title: Universal Robots UR8 Long Industrial Robotic Arm
I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Engineering Laboratory (EL) conducts research to advance measurement science, standards, and technology that improve the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing and enhance the nation's industrial capabilities. The laboratory develops and evaluates advanced manufacturing technologies, automation systems, robotics, and metrology solutions to improve the performance, interoperability, and reliability of modern manufacturing processes.
The Intelligent Systems Division (ISD) within the Engineering Laboratory performs research in robotics, autonomous systems, and intelligent manufacturing. This work includes the development, integration, testing, and evaluation of robotic systems used for automated assembly, material handling, machine tending, and other manufacturing applications. The division's research supports the development of measurement methods, reference implementations, and best practices that enable greater adoption of advanced automation technologies across U.S. industry.
To support these research objectives, the Government requires a collaborative industrial robotic arm capable of performing precision manipulation and automated assembly tasks in a laboratory environment. The robotic system will be used to develop, test, and validate robotic applications involving automated screwdriving, part handling, end-of-arm tooling integration, and manufacturing process automation. The platform must support the integration of compatible grippers, sensors, software, and peripheral devices to facilitate research involving robot programming, system interoperability, and advanced manufacturing workflows.
The acquisition of a Universal Robots UR8 Long Industrial Robotic Arm, or an equivalent system meeting the Government's technical requirements, will provide the laboratory with a modern, flexible, and collaborative automation platform capable of supporting ongoing and future research, technology demonstrations, and standards development activities.
Purpose/Objective: The purpose of this requirement is to acquire a Universal Robots UR8 Long industrial collaborative robotic arm (or equivalent), including a compatible parallel gripper and the accessories necessary to support automated screwdriving operations. The UR8 Long is an extended-length, 6DOF collaborative industrial robot arm, which will be able to reach >1.5m and has an 8kg payload to lift assembled parts for inspection. The robotic arm is to support the NIST AI Accelerator project to enable the assembly and transport of printed circuit boards. The UR8L contains functionalities the AI Accelerator testbed is currently lacking and will enable larger part transfer across the entire workspace, automated screwdriving, and AI-based product inspection research.
