About this file

This is a Sole Source Justification form (DP-45-0996) submitted by the State of Colorado on behalf of Front Range Community College's MSTAT WEL division for the procurement of an automated laser welding system from Serra Laser. The procurement encompasses a dual-cell portable laser welding enclosure with integrated LightBot and manual IPG Photonics laser safety interlock system, a Fanuc CRX cobot with integrated laser welding capability, dual-axis positioner, laser welding helmets, laser safety glasses, and a Fanuc Preston Eastin tilt and rotate unit with eight-axis coordinated motion control. The system is designed to support both manual and automated weld training with redundant safety and laser welding systems that can be easily adapted for educational purposes. The quote was issued on August 23, 2026, with an expiration date of September 22, 2026, and includes a five-week delivery timeline for all items except the tilt and rotate unit, which requires twelve weeks. On-site training and setup of the Fanuc to LightWELD system is included in the proposal.

The total procurement cost is $229,136, with an educational discount applied bringing the net cost to $213,096, which includes shipping to the school's location at 80526. Front Range Community College justifies the sole source designation on the basis that Serra Laser is the exclusive authorized provider of the LightBot robotic laser welding system and LightSafe weld cells, representing the only laser system identified that functions as a dual-use manual and robotic welding setup with purpose-engineered cell interlocks that safely disable the laser system when the cell door opens. The college indicates that only used and refurbished systems are available from other vendors, and that while some components such as laser glasses and helmets could potentially be procured elsewhere, the integrated system package meets both criteria for sole source procurement under Colorado Procurement Rule R-24-103-205-01.

Serra Laser is the exclusive provider for automated laser welding systems utilizing the Fanuc CRX series cobot.

This is the only laser system we have identified that is designed as a dual use manual and robotic laser welding setup.

The LightSafe weld cell was identified as an easily storable and non-permanent enclosure allowing us to relocate the system in accordance with future shop needs without incurring future costs. Additionally this is the only system we identified that comes equiped with purpose engineered cell interlocks that safely disable the laser systems when the cell door is opened, preventing any risk of life altering injury to individuals outside the cell. We were unable to identify any other vendors that could provide an equivalent package with as robust safety features.

Dual cell portable laser welding enclosure with ceiling and integrated LightBot and manual IPG Photonics laser safety interlock system. Fanuc CRX cobot with integrated laser welding capability and dual axis positioner.

This system allows 2 independant work enviornments equipped with redundant safety and laser welding systems that can be easily adapted for both manual and automated weld training . Additionally the associated robot can be used outside of the work cell and implemented into robotic welding classes allowing for Fanuc cobot training with industry accurate TCP and coordinated motion training.

Serra Laser - LightWELD

Shari, IPG photonics sells their welders elsewhere, but they are not robot integrated so it isn't the same product. Serra Laser is the manufacturer and the only authorized seller of the LightBot robotic system and lightSafe weld cells. Only used and refurbished systems are available from other vendors.

The laser glasses and laser welding hoods could technically be purchased elsewhere so if we need to remove them from this sole source we can. Those won't go out to bid we will direct purchase them if that's the case.

With that said, I believe we meet both requirements for the Sole Source route.

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi David, It’s possible that Serra Laser would qualify for sole source, and maybe I just need more information since I don’t understand the system. When I looked up the different items it looked like there were some options online which is why I felt like we should go with the DQ.

Sole source procurement basis for vendor selection is:

There is only one supply or service that can reasonably meet your need, AND There is only one vendor who can reasonably provide that supply or service.

(You MUST meet BOTH criteria to have a sole source procurement. Procurement Rule R-24-103-205-01) If the sole source is for services greater than $100,000, the procurement official or his or designee shall publish a notice of the sole source on an electronic procurement system for not less than three (3) business days in accordance with section 24-106-103(5), C.R.S.
