About this file

This memorandum details a sole source justification for a replacement diesel engine. The Navy requires a new engine to replace one on a vessel that is no longer operational due to irreparable cylinder damage. The vessel is specifically equipped for a Steyr engine, and the replacement must be a matching Steyr model. Both government personnel and contractors are trained and equipped to work only on Steyr engines, and all spare parts on hand are also for Steyr models. Accordingly, the sole source justification argues the replacement must be a Steyr engine in order to restore the vessel's functionality and maintain compatibility with existing resources and expertise. The estimated cost and required delivery date for the sole source procurement from Steyr Motors GmbH are also provided.
