Statement of Work (SOW)
Sitka National Historical Park
Install The Waasgo Legend Pole & Replace Yaadaass Crest First Twin Corner Pole
1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION / SUMMARY:
Sitka National Historical Park (Sitka NHP) seeks to procure a contract to have two Sitka NHP provided totem poles installed (Waasgo Legend and Yaadaass Crest First Twin). The Waasgo Legend totem pole is a new pole that will get installed in a new location. The Yaadaass Crest First Twin totem pole is a new pole that will be replacing an existing one (see Map 2). Both are located along an existing 8-foot-wide gravel trail that can be accessed from the parking lot area for the Visitor Center. It is anticipated that the contractor will need to visit the site prior to providing pricing to ensure all components of the project are accurately recorded and in line with the Park’s project planning.
2.0 OBJECTIVES:
To safely remove and dispose of the existing Yaadaass Crest First Twin totem pole and replace it with a newly carved replacement totem pole. Install newly carved Waasgo Legend totem pole in a newly established location. Ensure that all methods used to install both new totem poles are sufficient to maintain vertical stability over time.
3.0 BACKGROUND:
Typical totem installation at the park involves placing the totem and its attached mounting post in an excavated hole and then backfilling and compacting the hole with clean granular material.
There is concern that the park’s typical method of installation for the Waasgo Legend pole (see
Photo 3) may be less than adequate due to the limited embedment length of the attached mounting post. Work prior to installation of the totem shall include providing a written assessment considering if the available embedment length of the totem is sufficient to maintain vertical stability given Sitka soils, backfill, and considering the Sitka environment forces (ie.
wind, water, earthquakes, etc.). The assessment will include developing an estimated Factor of
Safety (FS) for the proposed totem and mounting post installation and recommend the range of
FS for this type of foundation installation. Should the FS for the proposed installation be determined to be outside the range recommended for this type of foundation installation, the contractor will propose recommendations on how to modify the below grade foundation to meet the recommended FS. Such recommendations will be submitted to the Park for concurrence.
4.0 SPECIFIC WORK / TASKS:
a. The contractor shall determine the appropriate means and methods to accomplish the project objectives.
b. Verify existing conditions for all work to be removed and all new work.
c. Provide all labor, materials, and equipment to safely complete the following tasks:
1) Remove and dispose of existing Yaadaass Crest totem pole (dispose of offsite).
2) Install new park furnished Yaadaass Crest totem pole in same location as old.
3) Install new park furnished Waasgo Legend totem pole in new location.
