The Refuge Runner is Marine grade aluminum vessel with two outboard Yamaha 115 HP motors. This vessel needs to be repowered. It is located in the Katmai National Park & Preserve King Salmon Maintenance Yard. The vessel requires replacement of both outboard motors for being underpowered and needing frequent repairs. The two existing 115 HP Yamaha outboard engines are to be replaced by two 150 HP Mercury outboard engines and associated controls, meters, and steering components.
Due to limited availability of outboard suppliers and favorable pricing offered to Katmai NP&P by Mercury Marine, this project should be completed using Mercury Marine outboards, components, and accessories. Mercury products are offered to Katmai NP&P at a substantial discount and shipping is free on orders totaling $150.00 or greater.
A. The Refuge Runner needs complete powertrain replacement, including the controls, meters, and steering of two 150 HP outboard engines. The fuel level gauge does not work and will be replaced as well.
1. Remove the two Yamaha 115HP outboard engines and accessories for the engines which will be disposed through surplus sale. Fill any holes in the transom or hull that will not be used.
2. No major modifications should be required.
3. Identify areas of special concern that may reduce longevity of reliable function and make appropriate changes to the hull, transom, and/or bridge.
4. Remove existing meters, gauges, cables, hydraulic lines, wiring harnesses, control boxes, and any other items necessary for the upfit and installation of new outboards.
5. Install all necessary components in a manner that retains a sealed hull, does not impede safe operation, in a manner with ease of serviceability in mind, and in such a way as to support the highest possible outcome for reliability, longevity, and efficiency.
6. All drilled holes in aluminum plates where wires or cable pass through must have rubber grommets or other chaffing protection installed. Bolt holes should be grinded or sanded to prevent aluminum burrs etc.
7. Ensure existing fuel hoses are of adequate size and condition for reuse. If not, replace fuel hoses.
B. Electrical System and electrical components: All electrical meters and gauges should function properly with the Mercury controller area network unless not necessary for safe boat operation.
1. Mercury SmartCraft gauges are required for properly functioning Tachometers, Speedometer, and Hour Meters. These are typically available as a set. The Mercury SmartCraft system allows some diagnostic functions to be performed through the gauges.
2. The fuel level gauge, wiring, and meter should be replaced.
3. Junction boxes are used to connect multiple Mercury engines to the SmartCraft system.
4. No changes should be made to existing circuits for vessel lighting, horns, bilge, or any other system unless included incidentally with replacement of outboards or necessary to complete the repower task. If repowering results in the alteration of existing circuits, those items should be addressed immediately to reduce the cost of addressing them at a later date.
C. Maintenance staff will test the Refuge Runner for normal operation to be certain all is in working order prior to being placed back in regular service.
D. Modifications to this work statement that result in additional costs or greatly increased time to completion, should be reported to the appropriate supervisor as soon as possible. Work should not continue until those modifications are approved.
