To support this research program, the USGS uses the RIV Alaskan Gyre, a 50' Ledford top house seiner to transport researchers to remote work sites in coastal Alaska. Maintenance includes changing oil and oil filters every 250 hours on main engine and gen set, greasing shaft zerks, and maintaining fluid levels on cooling systems, hydraulics, and batteries. In addition, the captain must keep a daily logbook and complete monthly safety checklists as specified by the USGS Large Vessel Safety Program.
