SPECIFICATIONS – On Always UPS Systems – Brand Name or Equal
We recently acquired a new mass spectrometer for stable isotope analysis (Thermo MAT 253+). To ensure this machine’s longevity, we need a power back up (for 15 minutes for brown outs), power conditioning (to maintain instrument performance and to not damage it), and a transformer with the appropriate grounds and neutrals (which current wiring does not have). These three criteria may be satisfied with the purchase of a new Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
Specifically, we have three main criteria necessary for the UPS:
1. Power Transformation: The current power coming out of the wall is at 208V. We have a step up transformer, but it does not output the power in the correct configuration. Delta configuration is what is normal in the United States for three phase power (3 hots and a ground), but as the Thermo machine was manufactured in Germany, it requires a 3 phase wye configuration (3 hots, ground, and a neutral). Currently the neutral is tied into the ground due to the way the machine has been set up, but this is insufficient and will cause a short that could irreparably damage the machine.
2. Power conditioning: There are power fluctuations that occur within building 95. We need power conditioning for two reasons. The first is that if the power fluctuates our readings will fluctuate, and that will affect the quality of the data. The second is that if the power fluctuates significantly enough it can damage electronic boards on the machine (specifically the power distribution board). It also slows down the turbo pumps associated with the machine, which increases wear on them and requires them to be rebuilt more often (which costs >$10,000).
3. Power Backup: We experience frequent lapses in power especially in the summer months. While we do not expect this device to power an instrument for hours, just having 15 minutes of backup is sufficient to protect the integrity of the instrument. If the power goes out, it immediately turns off. This causes wear on the pumps if not done properly and in a controlled manner (as discussed above). In addition, if it happens when certain procedures are being completed atmospheric gas can get into the machine and damage it. The 15 minutes gives us enough time to decide whether to controlled shut down the machine or ride out the brown out without damaging our infrastructure.
Specifications:
- Power step up transformation from 208V to 230V
- Transformation from three phase delta to three phase wye configurations (3 hots, neutral, and ground)
- Power conditioning so that output power is withing 1% of spec under static load
- Bypass so that batteries can be swapped without powering down instrument
- 2 x 29 9 Ah Batteries providing 15 minutes of backup for instrument.
