Performance-Based Work Statement (PWS)
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The USGS – Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center has a requirement for single crystal U-Pb zircon CA-TIMS analysis of rock samples.
2.0 BACKGROUND
The USGS conducts research on regional geology related to energy, minerals, and hazards. This involves making geologic maps of the area being investigated, and reconstructing the tectonic, climatic, erosional and depositional histories of rocks within the study region. Single crystal U-Pb zircon CA-TIMS analysis is used to establish the high-resolution age control in sedimentary basins and is often able to date the rock record at >0.1%-level, which is crucial for reconstructing basin histories and building mineral system frameworks. U-Pb zircon CA-TIMS analysis is unique from other U-Pb zircon analytical procedures, as zircons are thermally annealed and chemically abraded, which removed domains of open system behavior within a zircon. Measuring zircon on TIMS allows for better beam stability and resolution, allowing for the discrimination of older xenocryst cores and potentially spurious young grains which experience Pb-loss. U-Pb CA-TIMS is particularly important for building inter and intra-basinal frameworks that need to be correlated with global stratigraphic and climatic histories. The samples submitted for U-Pb zircon CA-TIMS analyses will help us elucidate the erosional, climatic and depositional histories for the greater Permian and Appalachian basins.
3.0 SCOPE
U-Pb zircon CA-TIMS analysis is highly complex and laborious procedure, with sample analysis taking up to 1 month to complete. We are requesting funds to analyze 130 zircon grains, assuming 10-12 grains per sample. Grains will be thermally annealed and chemically abraded in concentrated HF acid for 8-16 hours. Chemically abraded zircons will be transferred to 3ml vials and ultrasonicated in aqua regia for two hours and then rinsed three times with concentrated HNO3. Clean, individual zircon crystals were transferred to modified PTFE capsules, spiked with the 205Pb-233U- 235U EarthTime 535 tracer solution and dissolved by vapor transfer with HF in a Parr dissolution vessel for 6 days.
Capsules containing dissolved and equilibrated zircon and spike were diluted in ~15 l of 6 M HCL and ~15 l 0.035 M H3PO4 and then dried onto an outgassed Re-filament with silica gel as emitter substance. Isotopes ratios were measured on a Sector 54 Mass spectrometer using a Daly-type ion counter that is situated behind a WARP filter. Data reduction will be completed offline using Tripoli and ET Redux as well as in Isoplot.
