Ponderosa Pine- Cone Storage, Seed Extraction, Grow Out for Blue Sky
USFWS Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge
Plush, OR
1. General:
United Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS), Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge is a 278,000-acre high desert, sagebrush ecosystem managed as wildlife habitat in Southeastern Oregon. The Refuge Headquarters is located 63 miles East of Lakeview, OR.
The Warner Peak fire burned 166 acres of pine forest located on the east slope of Hart Mountain, known as the "Blue Sky" ponderosa pine stand. This forest stand is geographically distinct in that it is the only contiguous conifer forest on the Refuge and the only Great Basin Montane Conifer Forest in the area, located at the edge of its natural range.
Of these 166 burned acres, only 2.6 acres of pine are expected to survive after the Warner Peak fire.
These acres include only 30-40 overstory trees, all of which experienced some level of low to moderate crown scorch.
Fire activity caused 100% mortality of all understory regeneration and saplings throughout the area, and >95% overstory mortality. Of the 65,002 acres burned on Hart Mountain NAR, it is anticipated that 163 forested acres will not have adequate seed source available to naturally regenerate within 10 years because the fire resulted in high mortality of coniferous trees; therefore, reforestation is necessary.
Reforestation of high mortality acres were identified by ground reconnaissance, burned soil severity map, and aerial imagery. The treatment purpose is to maintain the ecological integrity of forest resources via re-stocking of the Blue-Sky ponderosa pine stand, which was adversely impacted by the Warner Peak Fire. Reforestation completed under this plan provides security that the area regenerates in a forested condition. This treatment will restore future forest cover, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce erosion to bodies of water. Loss of these forested acres would result in loss of the ecosystems’ services.
The Blue-Sky ponderosa pine stand has historical as well as ecological significance due to the limited distribution of forest cover on the Refuge. Old Camp Warner was established in 1867 adjacent to the Blue-Sky pine stand. During occupation much of this forest was harvested to support stationed infantry.
In the following years pine was planted to reestablish forest cover. Some residual old-growth ponderosa pines were still present when the camp was abandoned and have become obvious within this stand. As a result of this planting most of the pine in Blue Sky were dense, even-aged stems ~160 years old. Conditions created by the Warner Peak fire will substantially impede the ability of Blue Sky to naturally recover.
