STATEMENT OF NEED
½” Mooring Chain
PURPOSE:
½” Long Link, galvanized chain is an integral part of every oceanographic mooring fabricated and deployed by PMEL. It is used a s a strength member as well as providing several places to “stop-off” the mooring during deployment and recovery operations.
SCOPE OR MISSION:
Purchase of mooring chain is critical to continuing operations of several projects at NOAA/PMEL. Without the chain none of our moorings would survive in the marine environment and moorings would be all but impossible to deploy and recover.
BACKGROUND:
The NOAA/PMEL mooring shop is responsible for the precise fabrication, storage and shipment of more than 100 oceanographic moorings every year. Without the availability of specific sizes and composition of mooring chain the research requirements could not be met.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
Chain is to be same dims and specs as ½” Deck Lashing chain EXCEPT it is NOT to be heat-treated. It shall have a minimum proof load rating of 12,900 lbs. and a minimum breaking strength of 25,700 lbs. and shall be hot dip galvanized per ASTM A-153. Chain to be provided in metal barrels of 400 ft each.
DELIVERY SCHEDULE:
Deliver by April 20, 2026 or sooner
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Chain to be marked every 7th link with manufacturers designation. Chain is NOT to be heat-treated.
NOAA SPECIFICATIONS FOR
LONG LINK MOORING CHAIN
Chain to be the same materials and dimensions as 1/2" Deck Lashing (0187232), with the exception that the chain is NOT to be heat-treated. Final dimension may be shorter because of not heat-treating. Use same form/weld tooling. First letter of 'Marking' is manufacturer’s designation. Three samples from each batch to
. be tensile tested to destruction and results included with Certificate of Compliance included with delivery.
• Nominal ½” long link mooring chain Actual material diameter: 13mm to 13.5mm Inside length: 80mm+-5mm Inside width: 25.4mm+-.5mm
• Steel: ASTM A29/A29M
• Heat Treat: None
• Minimum Proof Load: 12,900 Lbs.
• Minimum Breaking Strength: 25,700 Lbs.
• Minimum Elongation: 15%
• Finish: Hot Dipped Galvanized per ASTM A-153.
• Marking: Regular marking at maximum of 7 links denoting •c4N' chain.
• Packing: Continuous length of 100 meters, minimum, in steel drums.
• Manufacturers Quality Level:*ISO 9001 Registered.
*ISO 9001 quality level is required to assure the highest level of quality control available. This chain is used in the fabrication of critical oceanographic moorings. The chain is not subjected to strain until it is deployed in the open ocean where failure may not be immediately apparent. A delayed failure of a single link of chain would cost approximately $75,000 in lost mooring equipment.
