About this file

This is a Request for Statements of Interest issued by South Dakota State University (SDSU) seeking architectural and engineering design services for the renovation of Rooms 327 and 329 in Berg Hall to create a Human Biology Inquiry Center. The project scope includes documenting existing conditions, concept development, preliminary cost estimates, design development, construction documents, bidding support, and construction administration, with the goal of transforming the existing 1,300 net square feet of laboratory space into an innovative learning environment. Interested firms are requested to submit a Statement of Interest by 3:00 PM on Thursday, August 28, 2025, to Colin Gaalswyk, Senior Project Manager/Engineer at SDSU.

The estimated construction cost for the project ranges between $980,000 and $1,200,000, with the renovation focusing on creating a flexible, forward-thinking educational space that supports 24 students across 4-6 learning stations. Key features include advanced technology integration such as large interactive displays, video conferencing capabilities, clinical tables with gas/water/vacuum connections, and a design that reflects a modern clinical setting while supporting lectures, wet labs, and clinical training. The technical review committee will select the firm based on criteria including specialized expertise (30%), resources (15%), past performance (20%), ability to handle project constraints (20%), project management techniques (5%), availability (5%), and familiarity with the project locale (5%).

RE: SDSU Human Biology Inquiry Center

Berg Hall Renovation Rooms 327 & 329 Architectural & Engineering Design Services South Dakota State University Brookings, SD 57006

OSE# R03-2528/DEL

South Dakota State University is requesting Statements of Interest from qualified firms to provide professional architectural and engineering design services for the renovation of Rooms 327 and 329 in Berg Hall.

The scope includes documenting existing conditions, concept development, preliminary cost estimates, design development, construction documents, bidding support, and construction administration. The goal is to transform the existing spaces into a Human Biology Inquiry Center—an innovative learning environment that supports immersive, hands-on student experiences not currently available elsewhere on campus. This new space will help better prepare students for professional school admissions and careers in biomedical fields.

The lab will serve as a flexible and forward-thinking educational space where students can explore new technologies, teaching methods, and real-world clinical applications. These upgrades aim to enhance curriculum delivery, support research, and strengthen recruitment efforts for the Human Biology program.

Key Features:

• Integration of advanced technology, including:

o Large interactive displays with connectivity for collaboration o Video conferencing & demonstration capabilities

• Clinical tables and fixtures for gas, water, and vacuum connections

• Support for 24 students, grouped into 4–6 learning stations

The space will be designed to feel welcoming and interactive while reflecting a modern clinical setting. It must be flexible enough to support lectures, wet labs, and clinical training—all within a single environment. The Inquiry Center will also serve as a showcase for Human Biology’s cutting-edge teaching and research.

Rooms 327 and 329 currently serve as laboratory and lab support space totaling approximately 1,300 net square feet of space. The construction cost for the project is estimated to be between $980,000 and $1,200,000. While the building’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems can support the renovation, they will require significant updates to meet the new demands. Structural limitations from the steel, concrete, and masonry will need to be considered in the design but are not expected to impact the project’s overarching goals. Finishes will be modernized to reflect a contemporary clinical lab. The design will emphasize openness, with strong visual and physical connections to the corridor to support student interaction, tours, and recruitment.

Firms interested in providing professional services for this project should send a Statement of Interest that outlines their qualifications and experience that would demonstrate expertise related to this project.
