About this file

The document is a comprehensive Signage Guidelines manual for Shelby Township in Michigan, developed by PEA Group in 2024. The guidelines outline detailed design specifications for six different types of municipal signs: Welcome Signs, Municipal Entrance Signs, Small Welcome Signs, Park Entry Signs, Vehicular Wayfinding Signs, and Pedestrian Wayfinding Signs. The project aims to improve consistency, clarity, and durability of signage throughout the township, with a focus on creating a unified wayfinding system that represents the unique history, culture, and character of Shelby Township.

The guidelines provide precise technical specifications for each sign type, including materials (such as aluminum, corten steel, and concrete), color schemes (using Pantone 355C green and grayscale colors), typography (using fonts like Gill Sans and Rockwell), and installation requirements. Each sign type has specific design intent, such as welcoming visitors, directing pedestrians and vehicles, and highlighting key municipal and historical locations. The document includes detailed plan and elevation drawings, specifying exact dimensions, mounting methods, letter sizes, and logo placement. Construction notes emphasize the need for engineered shop drawings, compliance with local codes, and verification of site conditions prior to installation.

Project Assignment Shelby Township contracted PEA Group to develop municipal signage design guidelines.

A new design standard will improve consistency, clarity, and durability.

The study included the following sign types:

Welcome

Wayfinding

Park

PEA Group is collaborating with a design team composed of Shelby Township representatives to present, discuss, and finalize all preliminary design options. These guidelines provide design direction for all future sign replacements and proposed signage projects.

Design Directive Adhere to the Shelby Township branding guidelines.

Standardize sign messaging to ensure consistency and legibility.

The purpose of these Signage Guidelines is to provide consistent, coherent and comprehensive signage throughout Shelby Township with the goal of effectively meeting the following design criteria:

• Create a seamless experience for regular users and visitors with a unified wayfinding system.

• Structure information to keep individuals moving logically toward their target destination.

• Make key public destinations such as parks and fire stations visible to newcomers and residents.

• Create a signage plan that represents the unique history, culture, and character of Shelby Township.

• Effectively welcome both pedestrians and vehicle users to the municipal campus and assist them in locating their destination.

Notes These guidelines primarily address welcome, park, and fire station signage, as well as municipal campus vehicular and pedestrian wayfinding. Building, trail, and any vehicular or pedestrian signage outside of the municipal campus do not fall under these guidelines. All adherence to the new signage guidelines will be administered by Shelby Township.

The drawings in this document are considered design-intent and are not for construction.

Written dimensions on these drawings have precedence over scaled dimensions. When new signs are ordered, the sign contractor shall submit shop drawings for review. These shall include further development and engineering of the design-intent drawings. The sign contractor shall verify and be responsible for all dimensions and conditions on the job.

Shelby Township should be notified of any variations from the dimensions and conditions these drawings prior to the execution of work.

The sign contractor shall follow all township standard logos, fonts, and colors. The sign contractor shall also follow all state and township codes for sign compliance.
