1.0 INTRODUCTION

NASA is investigating the utilization of airframe-focused flight demonstrations to rapidly mature and transition integrated technologies and support associated vision systems for introduction into the US fleet no later than 2035. At the Agency level, this research has high potential to catalyze economic growth and to enable sustainable aviation and minimize adverse impact on the climate. At the ARMD level, this research is to help realize transformational improvements in environmental and economic performance for next generation single aisle commercial transports.

Effective Date: September 15, 2021 Page 4

The SFD shall demonstrate handling qualities and stability and control representative of future single aisle-class aircraft configurations to meet FAA handling qualities and stability and control requirements.

The SFD structures shall employ fail safe and/or damage tolerant designs to mature single aisle-class aircraft structural architectures targeting an EIS by 2035.

The SFD shall obtain NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center airworthiness approval.

The SFD shall comply with NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center and test range processes and regulations.

The SFD shall be operated from a NASA facility with infrastructure and services that meet the operational and test requirements for the chosen configuration.

The SFD shall have sufficient life for future technology spiral development testing.

The SFD shall utilize a NASA provided flight test instrumentation system for all flights.

The SFD aircraft shall be transferred to NASA following initial envelope expansion flights.

3.2 Demonstration Characteristics

The SFD’s first flight shall be conducted in CY26.

The SFD flight research campaign shall be completed within 6 months from first flight.

The SFD flight research campaign and closeout shall complete in FY27.

Effective Date: September 15, 2021 Page 5

All SFD flights shall be controlled from a NASA control room.

All SFD flight test activity (envelope expansion and research / performance assessment flights) shall be jointly conducted with NASA and Contractor personnel to include but not limited to aircrew, control room staffing, data reduction, etc.

Design, ground test, and flight research data from SFD shall be utilized to measure the contractor’s Vision System performance status in terms of the Mid Term Objectives listed in Figure 1 over the life of the project.

Figure 1 – Subsonic Transport System Level Metrics

Design, ground test, and flight research data from SFD shall be utilized to measure the contractor’s Vision System performance status in terms of the Mid Term Objectives listed in Figure 1 over the life of the project.

The SFD Demonstrator aerodynamic performance shall be measured and compared to a minimum threshold.
