BACKGROUND
The Department of Natural resources is currently investigating grass carp populations in Western Lake Erie. Capture efficiencies for grass carp with traditional sampling gear have not been effective. The seine has proven to be more effective with capturing grass carp that traditional Department of Natural Resources fisheries sampling gear. The Department has engaged in two research projects to better understand the movement and reproductive capabilities for grass carp in Lake Erie
SCOPE
The commercial fisher must conduct 18 total seine hauls in Michigan waters of Lake Erie in 2019. The seines used during these fishing efforts must be the same seines authorized under commercial fishing license 1300.
REQUIREMENTS
1. General Requirements
1.1. Product Specifications
The seine hauls must be conducted at the following sites, during the timeframes described below.

· 3 seine hauls between the months of September and November (fall)
Plum Creek – Fig. 3

No more than one seine haul shall be conducted on the same day at any location unless grass carp are captured. If seining is not possible at any of these locations during these times, notify the Michigan DNR for an alternative sampling plan. The MDNR must be notified at least two days prior to conducting each seine haul attempting to include personnel to participate in the seine operation. A minimum of three days must pass before additional seine hauls occur at any of these locations during the two/three month seasons.
If MDNR personnel is unable to attend any individual seine haul described above, we have provided datasheets to assist with proper data collection during these hauls. The required information to record includes; date, detailed location description, latitude/longitude, seine time start, seine time end, number of grass carp captured, other aquatic invasive species captured, targeted commercial species total catch volume, buffalo species total catch volume, and common carp total catch volume.
The DNR will provide the vendor with the following datasheets and maps to assist with implementing the seine hauls while also providing the DNR with the necessary biological information to help address grass carp threats in Lake Erie.
