High Voltage, High Current Pulse Generator

Timeline Within eight weeks from the date of the award.

Background The HVAC&R Equipment Performance Group pursues research that aids the advancement of air-conditioning, heating and refrigeration technology. The High voltage, high current pulse generator is a key component necessary for the construction of a new Magnetocaloric Test Apparatus, which will be built according to the plans outlined in NIST Technical Note 1931, “Novel Method and Apparatus Design for Testing Small Magnetocaloric Samples.”

The apparatus will enable our group to measure the Magnetocaloric Effect (MCE) with minimized uncertainties for test samples of 5 g. The effort is meant to aid U.S. industry in selecting new, limited-quantity magnetocaloric (MC) materials for the advancement of magnetic refrigeration.

Specification criteria – Minimum Requirements The minimum specifications criteria for the High voltage, high current pulse generator are shown in the following tables.

Specification criteria: High voltage, high current pulse generator Parameter Criteria

Documentation: Operation manual Setting Accuracy ± 3% (plus ±1V or ± 2 ns) or less

Settings resolution of the timing parameters (pulse width, delay, period)

Better than 0.15% of (|set value| + 20 ns).

Amplitude resolution Less than 0.1% of the maximum amplitude

Load resistances Can drive a single 5 Ohm or less resistive load, or multiple 50 Ohm or less loads with a 200 kW pulse

Load resistances as low as 2.5, 5 or 10 Ohms, or as high as open circuits

Load resistances Extra consideration given for being able to drive a 2 Ohm or less resistor with 200 kW pulse or greater

Available output currents Several between 4 amps and 200 Amps

Available voltages Several between 40 Volts and 1000 Volts

Maximum output current 200 Amps

Maximum output voltage 1000 Volts

Maximum output current Extra consideration for currents larger than 200 Amps and up to 400 Amps

Maximum output voltage Extra consideration for voltages larger than 1000 Volts and up to 2000 Volts

Peak power 200 kW Average power 100 W Peak power Extra consideration for peak power larger than 200 kW and up 400 kW Average power Extra consideration for average power larger than 100 W and up 200 W Rise times Less than 200 ns Fall times Less than 200 ns Pulse widths Several between 200 ns to 10 micro-s Pulse widths Extra consideration for pulse widths larger than 10 micro-s Rise and Fall times and pulse widths All rise and fall times and pulse width requirements will be reduced to “less than 40 micro-s” if the pulse meter can meet a maximum power output between 300 kW and 400 kW

Calibration CE mark certification or equivalent

Operating Temperature Range 278 K to 313 K Communications IEEE-488 and/or USB

Settings accuracy ± 3% (plus ±1V or ± 2 ns)

Settings resolution better than 0.15% of (|set value| + 20 ns).

Amplitude resolution < 0.1% of the maximum amplitude

Instrument must be ready to use All ancillary equipment, including software and computer, must be provided so that the instrument is ready to drive a 5 ohm resistor on the day of delivery. The instrument must be fully functional without the need for NIST to supply additional equipment such as a separate power supply, etc.

Power: 115V single phase. A transformer must be provided for the equipment if other power requirements other than 115V single phase are necessary.

Electrical: Wired and Ready to operate

Minimum Warranty: 90 days

Quantity Quantity needed: 1

Acceptance/Inspection Criteria The High voltage, high current pulse generator will be tested by the HVAC&R group, and verified to deliver to measure the specified accuracy of the instrument. The High voltage, high current pulse generator will be inspected at a Government site.

Shipping/Delivery The High voltage, high current pulse generator shall be delivered to the NIST-Gaithersburg site by the Contractor to the following address:

National Institute of Standards and Technology Building 301 Shipping & Receiving 100 Bureau Drive Gaithersburg, MD 20899-0001.

NIST is a controlled-access facility. Delivery personnel must be U.S. citizen or U.S.

permanent resident.
